Job Description
The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering ( MAE ) at the Batten College of Engineering & Technology ( BCET ) at Old Dominion University ( ODU ) in Norfolk, VA, invites applications for a tenure track or tenured faculty position in the broad area of biomechanics. This position is to begin in Fall 2025 and will be an annual 10-month appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank. We are particularly seeking applicants in the areas of Computational or Experimental Biomechanics at the cell, tissue, organ or whole human body-level that are doing fundamental and/or applied research with applications that include, but are not limited to, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, injury/disease modeling, ergonomics, rehabilitation or robotics are sought.
The appointed faculty member will:
Develop and sustain an externally funded research program.
Develop and teach biomechanics and other courses in mechanical engineering and/or biomedical engineering.
Advise students.
Perform service obligations.
Serving on committees.
The appointee will also hold a core faculty affiliation with the newly established Institute for Engineering in Medicine, Health, & Human Performance (EnMed) that advances bio-related research and education across the Batten College of Engineering & Technology. The EnMed Institute includes the Biomedical Engineering program, and the appointee will play a key role in supporting its mission and growth.
This appointee will also have opportunities to collaborate with faculty members in MAE , BCET , and the University with complementary expertise, including those in Frank Reidy Research Center for Bioelectrics and Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences which includes Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications
All candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field. ABD candidates whose degree will be conferred by May 2025 will be considered for Assistant Professor appointments.
Candidates applying for an appointment with tenure must have the academic background necessary to warrant a tenured position in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering.
Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities
All candidates must have a record of conducting research in biomechanics, evidenced by peer reviewed publications. Candidates applying for a senior faculty position must have a record of sustained research in biomechanics, including peer reviewed publications and external funding.
Preferred Qualifications
Post-doctoral research experience.
Teaching experience as Teaching Assistant or Course Instructor.
Record of research funding such as fellowships or external grants.
A plan for developing an externally funded research program at ODU , with expressed interest in leveraging complementary research expertise at ODU .

About the College
Old Dominion University’s Frank Batten College of Engineering Technology has the unique advantage of having both engineering technology and engineering programs. About the Department
The department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is comprised of 25 faculty, about 650 undergraduate students, and 140 graduate students. Current research areas include advanced manufacturing, materials, mechatronics and automation, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, unmanned and space systems, renewable energy, computational fluid dynamics, and thermal-fluid systems. The MAE department houses well-equipped laboratories where faculty and students conduct research on diverse topics ranging from micromechanics and cellular mechanobiology to smart systems, composites, and robotics. The faculty conduct research in collaborations with the NASA , NIA , Thomas Jefferson Lab, Naval Shipyard and Naval Warfare Centers.
