WR Systems Engineering Manager, Systems in Norfolk, Virginia

Clearance Requirement: Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance

Travel Requirements : Occasional

Location: Norfolk, VA

SUMMARY : WR has an opportunity for a Systems Engineering Manager to design and develop systems-level software, providing systems support, and functional management of assigned personnel. This position reports to the Director, Engineering.

Position responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides day-to-day management of assigned personnel, to include handling routine staff issues, resource allocation, training, performance management, career development, compensation management, disciplinary actions, and separation within WR’s matrixed engineering organization.

  • Hires and maintains assigned systems engineering personnel.

  • Provides technical management assistance to a group of systems engineers within areas of core technical competency.

  • Analyzes the performance of hardware and software interfaces and identifies alternatives for optimizing the usage of computer resources.

  • Independently applies generally accepted programming standards and techniques to assure efficient program logic and data manipulation.

  • Participates in designing, modeling, testing, debugging, configuring, and documentation of systems.

  • Provides assistance and routine consultation to users in the development of systems and environments.

  • Installs systems or provides support for modifications and upgrades of systems and environments; may direct the activities of technicians to assist in these tasks.

  • Independently manages system maintenance and repair activities.

  • Independently and efficiently diagnoses and resolves system problems.

  • Acts as liaison with manufacturers and vendors of systems and application products, especially with regard to problem diagnosis and resolution.

  • Plans and executes system version upgrade releases and custom interfaces.

  • Works with others to develop alternative system and software designs.

  • Recommends selection, approval, and acquisition of hardware, software, networking components, and services.

  • Writes and maintains documentation to describe program development, testing, changes, and corrections.

  • Writes documentation or reviews documentation written by others that describes installation and operating procedures.

  • Participates in the evaluation of new technical resources.

  • Collaborates with multidiscipline engineering teams to evaluate internal and external system interfaces and the impacts of systems architecture, software, and hardware on operational requirements.

    Candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Computer/Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Math, Physics or related scientific discipline.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering Management, Business Administration, or in related technical discipline preferred.

  • Ten (10) + years of professional experience in systems, software, electrical or mechanical engineering.

  • Demonstrated experience with team/group leadership.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of system engineering models, development models, processes, Unified Modeling Language (UML), tools scheduling and budgeting.

  • Experience identifying and troubleshooting systems irregularities.

  • Experience with project management and change requests.

  • Familiarity with virtualization sustainment and maintenance.

  • Experience providing full life-cycle engineering support on DoD-sponsored programs.

  • Computer proficiency with MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint.
