Childrens Hospital of The King's Daughters Director, RN - PICU in Norfolk, Virginia

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Director, RN - Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) facilitates collaborative partnerships with the physicians to ensure service line development, management, and growth. The Director, RN - PICU is accountable for overall operation, direction and delivery of patient care that promotes safety and well-being of all patients on a twenty-four-hour basis. Responsibilities include but are not limited to implementing evidence-based nursing practice to achieve operational excellence, facilitating respectful and productive interdisciplinary collaborations, promoting, and monitoring a culture of efficient, results and customer-oriented services, as well as coordinating staff educational opportunities and certification processes. A high level of independence in performance of the role and/or solution of problems is expected, however, demonstrated cooperation and collaboration is equally essential for successful functioning. This position supports sound fiscal and human resource practices and provides effective leadership to support the development and achievement of the organization’s strategic priorities. Reports to the Vice President, Patient Care Services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides leadership and direction for the PICU.

  • Manages research and programmatic grants for service area, develops processes to promote quality of service, budgetary compliance, and provides leadership to clinical social workers, child life specialists, and other team members. Monitors operations and quality standards to assure compliance with governmental regulations and the established standards of accrediting agencies, including federal research regulations.

  • Implements nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards of nursing practice, CHKDHS philosophy and operational policies while maintaining compliance with state and federal rules and regulations. Ensures that each nurse is properly certified and abides by established standards of care and with laws and regulations.

  • Ensures the proper staffing of assigned units and, either directly or through delegation to managers, is responsible for scheduling, training, and developing, and evaluating the performance of nurses and others. Proactively develops positive employee relations and recognition.

  • Development of processes to promote quality of service, budgetary compliance, and overall operations of the departments. Provides clear direction regarding budget expectations, setting performance expectations and desired outcomes. Monitors monthly productivity data, contributes ideas to improve methods and productivity while maintaining high quality patient care.

  • Reviews daily VERGE and other reports from assigned units to ensure timely and effective responses to issues and problems.

  • Collaborates with physicians to ensure patient-centered care, respectful communication, and focus on improving outcomes.

  • Role model the EXCEL behaviors and coach/mentor staff to impact staff and patient experience. Promotes teamwork, mutual respect, and effective communication.

  • Mentors and coach’s managers and nursing staff to ensure professional development.

  • Collaborates with other departments, such as I.S. Infection Control, Quality, and others, in enhancing safety, process improvement and other initiatives.

  • Initiates progressive discipline policy as needed when an individual’s performance does not meet expectations and maintains consistency to ensure appropriate corrective action process.

  • Leads, manages, coaches, and trains a team or department, provides guidance, support, and mentors to ensure optimal performance and productivity.

  • Oversees the recruitment, hiring, team/department orientation, performance appraisals and disciplinary actions including up to termination processes for a team or department.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Required Licenses and/or Certifications

  • Registered Nursing License in the State of Virginia or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license required at time of hire.

  • Preferred Licenses and/or Certifications

  • None required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Required Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university required.

  • May be substituted with the following:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or related field from an accredited college or university provided the candidate possesses a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university.

  • At time of hire, actively pursuing a Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited college or university. Candidate must graduate with an MSN within one year of hire.

  • Five years of progressive nursing leadership experience in a setting committed to collaborative decision making and team development required.

  • At time of hire, a record of completion and/or enrollment for all education, licenses, training and/or certifications is required.

  • Continuous re-certification and/or maintenance of state licensures, certifications, educational and application requirements is required during employment.

  • Preferred Education and Experience

  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Professional knowledge of areas of responsibility to include theory, practice, and administration to direct planning and implementation.

  • Requires critical thinking and analytical skills necessary to organize and oversee work of subordinates.

  • Proficiency and technical aptitude with the use of Adobe Acrobat and MS Office products, including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word.

  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic team player who takes initiative.

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

  • Excellent time management skills, able to shift priorities and able to work independently and problem solve in a fast paced, fluid environment.

  • Possesses strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills as well as, the ability to interact with and build collegial relationships with diverse individuals.

  • Has a level of independence and assertiveness to assume leadership role in the project and able to function as part of a team.

  • Ability to follow Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) policies and procedures and maintain confidentiality of all facility and facility-related (patients/families) information.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
