Telespazio Belgium Project Scientist in the Physics Research Office in Noordwijk-Binnen, Netherlands

On behalf of the European Space Agency, we are looking for a highly skilled Project Scientist in the Physics Research Office to work in ESTEC, in the Netherlands.

What is expected from you:

The Enabled Science and Utilization team of the Human and Robotic Exploration (HRE) programme covers a wide range of platforms and destinations, such as ground-based research facilities, drop tower, parabolic flights, sounding rockets, ISS and other future LEO platforms, Lunar Gateway, Moon and Mars.

Reporting to the HRE-SU Team Leader, the candidate will oversee and manage various aspects relating to science selection, implementation, development, planning and community engagement within the field of space research. In this role, the candidate will be required to coordinate science selection processes, identify peer reviewers and communicate results to the European science community.

  • Definition, collection and maintenance of Scientific requirements for Space experiments implemented on the different platforms sponsored by ESA

  • Ensuring that the maximum scientific return from a mission is maintained as a target throughout all phases (study, development, operations, archiving), within technical, programmatic, and safety constraints;

  • Support ESA TO throughout payload development reviews, through all development phases, including but not limited to PDR, CDR and FAR

  • Interfacing for scientific matters with the operations teams, external scientific teams, partners, and the community;

  • Supporting ESA science team issuing focussed Announcement of Opportunities as well as Continuously Open Research Announcements, supporting the collection of proposals and peer review process;

  • Preparing and disseminating relevant scientific documentation and reporting to ESA management and, as requested, to the Advisory Structure;

  • For the mission extension proposals, leading the development of the science case for the wider ESA community;

  • Promoting the mission to the wider scientific community via conferences and electronic means, and supporting broader Directorate and Agency communications, outreach, and education activities;

  • Support ESA Science Teams as needed, in preparation of Council Ministerial proposal

What you offer:

  • A PhD in Physics, Engineering or relevant fields

  • Experience in coordinating the scientific community and managing multiple interfaces at the international level.

  • Knowledge and experience in scientific space missions and payloads for space research.

  • Experience in promoting science to the wider scientific community and general public.

  • Knowledge of the latest developments in research and facilities in the relevant field teams.

  • Experience in interfacing with industrial contracts.

  • International work experience.

  • A good understanding of the European and worldwide space science context

Where:

You will be working within ESTEC, the European Space Agency's offices in the Netherlands as a contractor for Telespazio Belgium. We don't expect the employees to be on-site full time however you will still have to relocate to the Netherlands for this position.
