Atlantic Health System Investment Portfolio Operations & Accounting Associate in NJ, United States

The Senior Accountant II, Investment Portfolio Operations & Accounting is responsible for monitoring and executing all material aspects of the Atlantic Health System, Inc. (“AHS”) investment portfolios to include AHS Hospital Corp., AHS Insurance Company, LLP, and AHS Hospital Corp.’s sponsored Cash Balance Plan and Post-Retirement Plan. The position will report directly to Director of Investment Strategy and must collaborate closely with the Controller of AHS Hospital Corp. and others within the accounting team for month end close.

The candidate will provide investment operations, investment accounting and performance reporting in support of the AHS’s investment pools noted above and will also be responsible for reporting for the affiliated foundation’s endowments. The role will focus on managing the daily operations and transactions associated with AHS’s investment management function. The candidate will demonstrate expertise in Custody Information Systems in order to develop and enhance AHS’s investment operations and accounting procedure to industry standard.

The candidate will liaise with the AHS custodian bank, investment managers, and consultants to provide investment accounting and investment operations support including compliance with investment guidelines, targets and performance reporting. The role entails extensive internal and external collaboration to ensure processes and reporting are compliant and efficient. Ensure the accuracy of internal controls, US GAAP and reporting related to the AHS investment pools.

Responsibilities

The Senior Accountant II, Investment Portfolio Operations & Accounting will coordinate custody operations and prepare supporting documentation for the processing and execution of investment transactions. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrate expertise in Custody Information Systems in order to develop and enhance AHS investment operations and accounting procedures.

  • Perform daily monitoring of investment portfolio and execute operational activities as deemed necessary by the Director of Investment Strategy in compliance with AHS’s established policies and procedures.

  • Initiate and monitor necessary portfolio asset sales/transfers with AHS’s custodian as directed by the Director of Investment Strategy.

  • Manage onboarding process for new investment managers.

  • Track all funding activities, including new funding events and redemptions.

  • Assess the accuracy of investment manager fees against agreed upon manager contractual agreements. Keep detailed records of all investment management fees paid.

  • Ensure vendor payment requests including investment management fees are prepared and processed and establish accruals for expenses as necessary. Execute payments including the implementation of capital calls.

  • Review cash balances for pension obligations and maintain adequate funding of pension custody and cash flow accounts in coordination with internal benefit payment services partners.

  • Support and improve the monthly investment performance reporting and due diligence process.

  • Utilizing the custodial compliance platform, monitor compliance of investment portfolios for established investment manager guidelines.

  • Perform analyses and reconciliations between the Custody Bank and AHS investment managers’ reporting including distributions, receipts, disbursements, and capital calls in order to perform daily accounting activities and manage financial reporting.

  • Perform and document period end portfolio valuation adjustments to support ongoing financial reporting requirements.

  • Manage the accounting close and reporting of investments, including posting journal entries, account reconciliations and analysis of financial results.

  • Conduct in-depth analysis and research of historical financial data relating to custody monthly and for yearend reporting.

  • Prepare schedules and footnote disclosures for quarterly and annual audited financial statements.

  • Work with internal partners on quarterly and year-end financial audit activities for investment-related matters including investment results recognized, unrealized and purchases and sales.

  • Support the implementation of business solutions by partnering with Northern Trust Custody, Investment Manager fund accounting teams and Investment Consultants.

  • Review SSAE 18 SOC 1 reports in the evaluation of internal controls operating effectively.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Relevant Experience / Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant, professional work experience

  • Must have knowledge of Custody banking and investment operations.

  • Must have knowledge of Investment Accounting.

  • Technical experience with business/corporate accounting utilizing GAAP, SOX, FASB, ASC etc.

  • Proficiency in and/or ability to communicate effectively within AHS, as well as with the custodian, and other external stakeholders.

  • Astute attention to details and ability to report findings on a timely basis.

  • Financial reporting experience to both internal and external entities with analytical skills to develop and interpret financial analyses.

  • Ability to take initiative and perform research to identify, analyze, and recommend actionable solutions to issues.

  • Proficiency in and/or ability to learn completing short- and long-term projects effectively and as efficiently as possible. Ability to work independently.

  • Strong analytical and/or quantitative skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks appropriately.

  • Solid knowledge of P&L and Balance Sheet Structure.

  • Proficiency and advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe.

Education, Training, Licenses, Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting Required.

  • Health care industry, not-for-profit, insurance company investment portfolio, and statutory accounting experience (or combination of above) preferred.

  • CPA preferred.
