What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do? Do you have a passion for working with youth? Would you like to make a difference working with youth within the City and making a meaningful impact in your community?

Well, this may be the opportunity for you! As a Juvenile Detention Specialist, in the Department of Juvenile Services, you would be responsible for the care, custody, discipline, and overall safety and security of juveniles assigned to various programs within the Department.

A typical day would include monitoring residents/ clients eating, exercising, and working activities, enforcing discipline, and escorting clients to court or family meetings. Some Detention Specialists may participate in programs created to help at-risk youth, such as life skills and substance abuse workshops. You would also be conducting incoming and outgoing orientation, which gives you the opportunity to see the full life cycle of the process.

There is also some administrative work that will require paperwork and logs to be completed, and in some circumstances, you may be subpoenaed to testify in court. Your help may be the spark that helps some troubled youth turn their lives around - doesnt that sound rewarding?

How much money can I make? In the Detention Specialist position, the estimated hiring range is $45,000.00 - $58, 854.81 annually depending on your education and experience. In addition to salary, the City provides a comprehensive benefits package to meet all of our employees needs! (Part time opportunities are also available for this position working an average of 10-29 hours per week (at least 32 hours per month) at an estimate hiring range of $21.63 - $27.88 per hour.)

What are the qualifications for this position? There are two levels to this position with the following minimum qualifications:

Detention Specialist I: Requires a high school diploma, twenty-one (21) years of age, and 2 years experience of education or work in a professional environment, or a combination of education and experience.

Detention Specialist II: Requires an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, Counseling or closely related field, twenty-one (21) years of age and 2 years of closely related work experience, preferably with juveniles, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An acceptable comprehensive background investigation to include a local, state, and sex offender criminal history check, as well as FBI Fingerprinting; a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record is also required. In addition to a background check, this position requires pre-employment medical evaluation, PPD, and substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. Individuals in this job classification cannot be listed as having a founded child abuse or neglect complaint.
