Position Summary:

The position will support two centers, namely the Material Characterization Laboratories (MCL) housed within the Otto York Center and the Microfabrication Innovation Center located at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. These stand at the forefront of technological advancement by providing a core resource for materials characterization, chemical analysis and microfabrication. The MCL is Equipped with state-of-the-art instruments tailored for material, chemical and environmental analysis, including scanning electron microscopes, spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The MIC is a comprehensive Microfabrication facility with Lithography and other tools. The Associate Director will oversee the technical aspects of MIC and business and project management aspects of both the centers.

Working closely with the Otto York Center’s Executive Director, the Associate Director of Business Development, this individual’s primary responsibility is to oversee and support the development and implementation of strategic business initiatives aimed at securing new clients, strengthening existing relationships, and increasing visibility of the research programs consistent with the overall goals and strategies of the Center.

Essential Functions:

  • Serves the function of business development, marketing and bringing industry and other customers on board to Material Characterization Laboratory (MCL), Microfabrication Innovation Center (MIC) and Device Research Lab (or DRL) which is a part of MIC.

  • Assesses potential new markets, evaluates business opportunities, and develops strategies for targeting potential customers.

  • Lead in revenue generation for MIC, MCL and DRL, which involves outreach to state agencies and companies on obtaining business opportunities & partnerships.

  • Interact with faculty, state agencies, industry and other universities as required.

  • Handles functions related to the daily operation of MIC which comprises of cleanroom and associated equipment.

  • Coordinates and handles all aspects of financial transactions in the centers.

  • Create and disseminate the MCL newsletters in conjunction with the Executive Director.

  • Develop contracts for industry and develop external membership base for MCL, MIC and DRL.

  • Identifying & evaluating potential new markets & new customers.

  • Write proposals to possible funding sources in the form of grants for the activity of the laboratory.

  • Develop training programs & organize industrial outreach for industries and outside agencies.

  • Develop a business plan & strategy for revenue generation, and gather inputs from relevant parties, such as instrumentation specialists.

  • Develop marketing materials and social media platforms to publicize the services provided by the centers.

  • Maintain the MCL website.

  • Develop sales projections and budgets for making the centers more self-sustaining.

  • Identify and evaluate sponsorship and speaking opportunities at conferences and seminars and ensure effective participation and ROI.

  • Support preparation and follow-up for these engagements.

  • Perform other duties within the center as needed.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field

  • Three to five years of experience in business development.

  • Direct experience in national or international sales, marketing, client relationship management and vendor relationship management, with the proven ability to build successful relationships.

  • Good understanding of laboratory operations especially microfabrication.

  • Experience in cleanroom operations and business development.

  • Well-developed project management and organizational skills and a strong results-oriented, goal-driven focus.

  • Able to introduce and drive innovation in ways small and large.

  • Demonstrated leadership, resourcefulness, problem-solving capabilities, and initiative.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including a high level of responsiveness.

  • Proven ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and manage tight deadlines and competing priorities while maintaining a professional demeanor.

  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in a related field.

  • Already established relationships with state, federal stakeholders as well as relationships with private research stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of the laboratory facilities and contract research is preferred.
