The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Staff Associate III in New York, New York

The Steckelberg Lab (www.steckelberglab.org) in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Columbia University is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Staff Associate III to join our team. Our lab is focused on mechanistic, structure-level understanding of host-virus interactions, with a particular interest in the interconnection between viral life cycle and RNA metabolism. Current projects include the analysis of RNA turnover and RNA quality control pathways during infection with RNA viruses of the Coronaviridae, Flaviviridae and Tombusviridae families.

The successful candidate will join the vibrant and collaborative research community of Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and have access to a state-of-the-art structural biology and biophysical equipment.


Minimum qualifications:

Requires a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or related discipline and 4-6 years of experience in a biomedical research setting.

The successful candidate will have a strong scientific record, excellent communication skills, be self-motivated, and enjoy working independently and as part of a team.

Preferred qualifications:

Master's degree and 5 years of experience preferred.

Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications:

The applicant should have strong knowledge of chemistry, biology, and virology, and must be proficient in standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, gel electrophoresis, setting up reactions using commercially available enzymes), and interested in learning new techniques. Experience in mammalian cell culture and/or the expression and purification of recombinant proteins is a plus. The applicant must have excellent organizational and communication skills, and should be comfortable conducting experiments under minimal supervision, training new lab members in standard laboratory techniques, and assist the PI in the preparation of publications and funding proposals. A successful candidate will be able to complete tasks in a timely manner, with fine attention to detail, and be able to multitask effectively. Being interested to engage socially with the rest of the lab is a plus, and the applicant must be a team player and enjoy working collaboratively in groups.
