The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Staff Associate I in New York, New York

The Staff Associate I in the AlQuraishi Lab will be assisting computational scientists in designing algorithms for designing new proteins and predicting the function of proteins using deep learning algorithms operating on the structure of proteins and biomolecules.

Duties

  • 50%: Contribute to the design of machine learning algorithms for protein design and function
  • 50%: Contribute to the curation of datasets for performing machine learning

Functional Knowledge

  • Use of lab-specific computational tools and pipelines for machine learning
  • Data analysis and applied machine learning tools
  • Basic knowledge of Bioinformatics and Protein Biology

Problem Solving

* Advanced computational problem-solving abilities, proactive, task-oriented

* Ability to understand research questions and apply proposed solutions, including application of quantitative frameworks to generate quantitative solutions

Decision Making/Autonomy (Must equal 10)

  • Level of supervision required, on a scale of 1 (least) to 10 (most) - #3
  • Degree of independent judgment expected, on a scale of 1 (least) to 10 (most) - #7

Leadership

  • To be able to effectively plan activities, dividing complex projects into specific tasks
  • To work effectively and collaboratively with a highly multidisciplinary team
  • To be able to cooperate effectively with experts from diverse scientific backgrounds, including life scientists, physicists, computer scientists and engineers

Technical Expertise

  • Computer languages and environments: Python, PyTorch
  • Understanding of commonly used computational pipelines developed for protein analysis
  • Ability to generate machine learning algorithms using PyTorch
  • Ability to perform data analysis in the context of protein structure and design

  • Bachelor's degree in computational biology, computer science, biochemistry, or related field
  • 1-2 years of experience in computational systems biology and machine learning

Technical Expertise

  • Ability to present scientific research to both experts and non-experts in the field
