The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Staff Associate I in New York, New York

The Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks a highly qualified Staff Associate I who will perform a research support role for the following: they will help to manage the mouse colony, which will involve setting up breeding pairs, weaning pups and performing genotyping on mice and the associated record keeping that entails. They will perform basic tissue culture in a support role - changing media.They will perform immunohistochemistry on both cell cultures and on tissue sections and will also set up imaging sessions on a confocal microscope. Provided the aformentioned tasks are accomplished, the individual will have the opportunity to lead a research project of their own, which they can present in group meeting and at conferences.

Job Function:

  • Mouse husbandry: management of mouse colony, which entails detailed electronic record keeping, monitoring breeding pairs, weaning pups.
  • Genotyping: obtaining small biological sample of each mouse, tagging their ear for record keeping purposes, digesting DNA, running PCR reaction, running gel, updating records for gel image and genotype for mice in colony.
  • Tissue Culture: Basic tissue culture - maintenance of primary neuronal cultures, preparation of stock TC reagents such as media, aliquoting supplements.
  • Immunohistochemistry: Tissue preparation (sectioning), performing immunohistochemical steps on tissue, mounting and coverslipping.
  • Imaging: Setting up confocal imaging sessions for tissue and cells where IHC has been performed. Booking 'scope, proper use of microscope on and off and clean up procedures, use of Zeiss software, Zen.

Lab Mission/Purpose:

The Au lab is a developmental neurobiology lab that focuses on the inhibitory neurons of the neocortex: cortical interneurons. We are interested in the developmental process of cortical circuit assembly and how defects in this process may lead to neuropsychiatric illness. We use a broad array of approaches to address this question including, stem cell directed differentiation, in utero transplantation, primary culture, mouse genetics and image-based machine learning.

Minimum Education Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in specific research field and 4 years experience preferred.

Minimum Skills Required:

Prior experience working in a wet bench lab and prior lab management responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior wetbench experience. Prior mouse husbandry experience a plus.
