The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Staff Associate I in New York, New York

The Reya Lab focuses on understanding the mechanisms that regulate stem cell fate and self-renewal, and how these mechanisms are dysregulated in cancer. The laboratory specializes in cancer biology with a focus on pancreatic cancer and leukemia and uses a variety of model systems to advance the work, including mouse models and in vitro cell culture systems. We are seeking a Staff Associate I who can assist with these studies and help to maintain the smooth daily operation of the lab.

a. Functional Knowledge

25%- Knowledge of the research subject and scientific methods of analysis

b. Problem-Solving

20%- Utilizes analytical skills to solve moderately complex problems based on guidelines and protocols

c. Decision Making/Autonomy

10%- Works within guidelines to carry out assigned duties in the conduct of specific experiments, analysis of data, an adaptation of protocols and technology to meet the needs of the project and maintenance of complex laboratory equipment

d. Technical Expertise

35%- Ability to perform experimental procedures, animal husbandry, assist with general lab management, operate and maintain lab equipment

e. Communication

10%- Document routine and experimental protocols and results, share information and data with colleagues and supervisors


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a specific research field.

Other Requirements

  • Expected to understand basic principles of animal husbandry, cell culture, molecular biology approaches, and standard laboratory procedures, and to follow and adapt established protocols independently.
  • Expected to determine what work needs to be done when and in what order and utilize time management skills in order to prioritize work.
  • Care and husbandry of transgenic and immuno-compromised mice; standard molecular biology techniques; mammalian cell culture; basic laboratory procedures, including sterile technique, preparation of buffers and reagents; PCR and gel electrophoresis; histological procedures.
