Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP Senior Desktop Engineer in New York, New York

Description/Job Summary

The Senior Desktop Engineer is responsible for the continual analysis and evolution of current systems as well as providing recommendations based on the review and evaluation of existing and emerging technologies. A good understanding of all infrastructure technologies is essential as this role includes project involvement across many systems administration disciplines. The Senior Desktop Engineer should assume the role of SME within the client organization working with other infrastructure technical SMEs to deliver best of breed products and services.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Test Firm-wide desktop software upgrades and installs; use scripting language to automate desktop tasks and provide recommendations

  • Collaborate with and mentor support teams to provide an optimum end user experience

  • Resolve escalated user and system issues as required

  • Analyze issues to determine if they are systemic and requiring a Firm-wide resolution

  • Troubleshoot and resolve product issues with vendors

  • Assess product changes for key Firm applications to determine the impact of changes on the user environment

  • Monitor product community sites for new methodologies and utilities to improve daily Firm operations

  • Provide in-house solutions for automating, streamlining and querying information from remote systems and databases

  • Accurately document instances in order to establish guidelines and procedures to assist user support in effectively resolving user issues

  • Source and implement troubleshooting utilities/tools as needed

  • Act as point of contact during Manager's absence

  • Must be available remotely during off hours as needed

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of "hands-on" experience in an endpoint engineering role is required.

  • In-depth knowledge of installation and maintenance of Microsoft's client OS-Windows 7 and higher.

  • Knowledge of hardware and software configurations required to support a large-scale environment

  • Ability to deal with problems involving ambiguity or a few concrete variables in standardized situations

  • Advanced programming skills in multiple scripting languages to automate tasks Powershell, Python, VBscript, WMI, ADSI, XML, etc.

  • In-Depth knowledge of Microsoft enterprise services such as Active Directory, Group Policy, DFS, DHCP, etc.

  • In-depth knowledge of client provisioning technologies such as sysprep, SUS, MDT, SMS and Windows Installer.

  • In-Depth knowledge of Microsoft productivity applications-Office, Exchange, SharePoint, Project and Visio, etc.

  • In-depth knowledge of user persona solutions and data replication/synchronization technologies, USMT, UEV, FSLogix, Ivanti, UPM

  • Deep knowledge of endpoint management toolsets including Tanium, SCCM, Intune Endpoint Manager, etc

  • Skilled in troubleshooting hardware issues, software issues and using tools such as Windows Performance Analyzer, Procmon\Sysinternals, Wireshark

  • Ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing

  • Ability to work with minimal guidance; strong analytical skills

  • Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in a large multi-domain/multi-site organization preferred

  • Knowledge of unique legal applications

Required Experience

  • 5 to 7 years of relevant experience required

Required Education

  • Associate's degree or 2 years college courses required, or equivalent work experience

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor's degree preferred

Salary Information

NY only: The estimated base salary range for this position in NY only is $130k to $160k at the time of posting.

The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. This role is exempt meaning it is not overtime pay eligible.
