The Executive Underwriter will serve as a key member of the Retail Design Professional Liability Team reporting directly to the Managing Director. The Retail Design Professional Liability Team focuses on professional liability for Architects, Engineers and Design Consultants.

    Responsibilities:

  • Territory Analysis and Planning: Comprehends strategy; identifies brokers who can begin or further partner with The Hartford in support of these strategies. Develops and maintains effective relationships with internal business partners and external brokers and clients. Negotiates appropriate policy terms and conditions with brokers. In collaboration with management, develops a pipeline of prospective accounts and persistently pursues them. Has keen insight into competitors’ strengths, weaknesses and strategies to capitalize on the ability to write profitable business.

  • Sales Excellence: Asks probing questions and listens carefully to uncover the customer's circumstances, needs, motivations and concerns. Articulates and sells The Hartford's value proposition, including its distribution, geographic, products and strategies, etc. Prepares for each account meeting and demonstrates that preparation with thoughtful questions.

  • Technical/Underwriting Discipline and Product Knowledge: Demonstrates ability to properly analyze, select and recommend target business. Demonstrates skill in analysis of loss and risk information, recognition of "red flags" and inconsistencies in information, appropriate evaluation and efficiency in determining and obtaining "need to know" information. Knows the Hartford Financial Lines risk appetite and proactively communicates it to brokers. Knowledgeable in various coverage forms and policy language; appropriately utilizes forms and exclusions; effectively articulates features/benefits of The Hartford products and services; accurately communicates to brokers regarding language requests; drafts language changes for legal review.

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience

  • 5 + years of professional liability underwriting experience – architects and engineers preferred

  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills

  • An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions.

  • High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit

  • Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills

  • Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes

  • Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win

  • Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills.

  • Established book of broker contacts

  • Ability to travel approximately 15% - 25%

Location:

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near one of the posted office locations will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near one of the posted office locations will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$121,760 - $182,640
