Director Clinical Lab-Clinical Lab Administration - WST- Mount Sinai West- Full Time- Days

The Director of Laboratory is responsible for overseeing the staff and operations within the Mount Sinai Health System at the assigned campuses to ensure optimal results and high employee engagement. The Director ensures that the department is run according to institutional policies and any applicable regulatory requirements. The Director ensures operational excellence through leading continuous improvement activities. Serves as liaison with external funding agencies, regulatory agencies and other collaborating institutions. Assists Senior management in the development of new initiatives. Works with Division Directors and Program Directors to anticipate daily challenges.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsibilities include developing a comprehensive knowledge of Mount Sinai Health System policies and procedures and all regulatory governing agencies.

  • Establishes goals and objectives for the department that are consistent with Mount Sinai Hospital or School of Medicines policies and federal, state and local regulations. This may include defining the scope of specific departmental projects, and analyzing requirements to execute those projects successfully.

  • Ensures cross-departmental consistency in meeting and administrative compliance standards; provides leadership and guidance to faculty and staff in matters related to understanding of overall departmental goals and objectives, and individual roles and responsibilities in this regard

  • Oversees operations to support Mount Sinai Health System, and the Icahn School of Medicine of Mount Sinai; uses data and fact-based problem solving techniques to improve processes and outcomes. Ensures that all operations run according to institutional and departmental policies and in accordance with any government or regulatory requirements as applicable.

  • Recruits, orients, trains, coaches, counsels, mentors, disciplines, and evaluates staff in accordance with all internal policies and procedures. Communicates values, strategies, and objectives of department or division on a regular basis. Assigns accountabilities, delegates tasks and responsibilities, and plans, monitors and appraises job performance.

  • Develops, maintains and reconciles departmental budget with financial responsibility and oversight for department or division.

  • Plans, develops, and/or maintains departmental standard operating procedures. Regularly reviews policies and procedures and makes changes, or recommends changes to superiors as necessary.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.

  • Provides leadership for staff members in the form of ongoing training, performance feedback, goal setting, and problem resolution; cultivate a culture of innovation and creativity in service of better patient care.

  • Works directly with the facility senior leader, Site Chairman and the site Medical Laboratory Director to identify and implement high impact operational initiatives.Collaborates with department senior leadership to develop short term and long range plans. Also serves as primary point-of-contact for interdepartmental communications, where applicable, in order to maintain standards, implement improvements, define and measure progress and meet business objectives.Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships within and outside of the Health System in order to identify and support local and corporate initiatives.

  • Serves as the department representative to the institution serving and participating on committees and on projects as invited and requested.

  • Responsible for creating, reviewing and/or updating policies and procedures pertaining to department specific goals and objectives.

  • Plans budget needs by analyzing short and long-term program plans. Collaborates with the Chief Financial Officer to assure the completion of the annual budget and financial monitoring.

  • Assures the financial systems are in place to properly run the department. Ensures compliance with MSMC policies and procedures.

  • Participates in the approval process for clinical operation financial transactions for the laboratories.

  • Implement quality assurance programs and oversees monitoring activities to meet standards and regulations of accrediting agencies such as The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (TJC),New York State and City Department of Health. (NYSDOH), College of American Pathologists (CAP).

  • Oversees activities of the Residency Coordinator and oversees the Residency Training Program including budget preparation, review of expenditures and sign of payments and stipends.

  • Serves as a mentor and coach in Lean Strategy development, the deployment of Lean methodology, change management and problem solving.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors Degree Required, Masters Degree Preferred.

  • Minimum of seven years experience in health care operations leadership

  • Minimum of ten years experience in laboratory operations

  • Experience in strategic planning and execution, formulating policy, building and developing financial plans, managing resources and leading successful teams.

  • Experience with integrated healthcare delivery systems is desirable.

  • Strong capability in data analytics, and ability to utilize data for problem solving and root cause analysis to drive continuous improvement. . Proven track record of achieving breakthrough results through implementation of large-scale projects and value-added change.

  • Minimum of 3 years direct experience with Lean or Six Sigma experience strongly preferred
