Job Description

The Department of Probation is seeking a Chief of Staff for the Office of the Commissioner. Under the executive direction of the Commissioner, with the widest latitude for initiative, judgment and action, the Chief of Staff will coordinate and implement agency initiatives, projects and assist in the oversight and management of agency operations. Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Works collaboratively with the Commissioner and Executive staff to establish and/or refine agency doctrine and policy to ensure that the agency’s goals and objectives are achieved. Assist the Commissioner with advancing agency priorities by providing strategic guidance and high-level support.

  • Ensures that all legislative and intergovernmental activities are synchronized and compatible with the activities of relevant organizations, private foundations, academic institutions, and professional community organizations to support agency objectives and strategies.

  • Provide oversight and implementation of special projects, including risk management and data collection and analysis, with a particular focus on monitoring effectiveness and enabling new pathways out of the criminal justice system.

  • Serves as liaison to agency staff, other government entities and the general public and guides the Commissioner in decisions affecting major policy and procedural changes related to issues involving public controversy and legislative sensitivity.

  • Ensures that the Commissioner remains informed of public concerns in regards to public safety and probation services.

Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of full-time paid experience in counseling or casework in a recognized agency adhering to acceptable standards in probation, parole, social services, psychiatric or medical social work or related field, at least 18 months of which must have been in a responsible supervisory, administrative or consultative capacity performing activities related to the duties of the position; or

A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must have at least 18 months of experience in an administrative, managerial, executive, consultative, executive capacity or supervising personnel performing activities related to the duties of the position.
