Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Career Management will play a key role in driving the career management function serving students in graduate technical programs. The incumbent will be responsible for assessing the student population needs, planning and executing innovative programs to meet these needs. Key aspects of the role include coaching students, creation and execution of career development programs and events, engagement with potential employers and industry experts on behalf of the students. This position reports to the Senior Director of Career Management.


This position will be a full-time appointment based at the Cornell Tech campus in New York City.


Successful candidates will need to have and display the following competencies as part of this role:


Effective Communication, particularly having the ability to communicate to a wide range of constituents (both internal and external), as well as being able to adjust both the form and style of communication to fit the audience and its message.

Required Qualifications:

Position Competencies/Skills:Job related knowledge, skills,abilities,and behaviors that contribute to success.

  • A BS or BA degree in a STEM field and/or experience recruiting for tech roles is desirable
  • 2-4 years of experience in industry and/or academic roles
  • Experience in successful recruiting or advising graduate students; understanding of the job markets for technical degree holders
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and coordinate ongoing activities in parallel.
  • Comfortable working with both high levels of autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate and influence with tact and diplomacy to a wide range of internal and external constituents.
  • Willingness to continuously examine processes and seek improvements.

Position Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Student Advising: 50 %

  • Advise faculty and program leadership on trends, opportunities and challenges related technical program students
  • Serve as primary career advisor for 400+ graduate studentsin technical programs.
  • Work with students pursing careers across a range of functions including software development, data analytics, data science, product management and engineering.
  • Advising students in networking, developing resumes, interviewing, etc.
  • Accompanying students on employer visits.
  • Coordinate with Ithaca Career Services staff on events and activities for students and planning of corporate events/visits as appropriate.
  • Ensure students have access to workshops, resources and events.
  • Conceptualize, design, and deliver comprehensive career management advice and curriculum to include in individual advising sessions, lectures, case interview preparation, programs, special events, and small group meetings.
  • Drive metrics to track placements of students and alumni.

Career Programming: 25%

  • Provide career support for master's students in technical programs pursuing full time and summer internship opportunities in a range of industries by:
    • Developing and implementing innovative programming (including events/workshops, mock interviews) to expose students to careers and attract employers to recruit Cornell Tech's students.
  • Engage and coordinate with students clubs in career programming and corporate outreach.
  • Work collaboratively with student clubs and organizations, as well as with faculty and alumni to develop resources and programming for students.

Employer outreach/Internal relationship building:20%

  • Establish and cultivate relationships with a diverse pool of prospective employers as well as other entities which can build a pipeline to such employers for full time and internship opportunities. Conduct outreach and visit targeted corporate partners and prospective employers.
  • Identifyneeds of students and make the necessary connections with alumni and recruiting representatives within target companies to ensure that students have access to timely, accurate information and to employment opportunities.
  • As appropriate, align with other areas across Cornell University to facilitate career programming and corporate outreach

Prospective/Incoming Student, Alumni Support, and Special Projects:5%

  • Present to prospective and enrolling students including at information sessions, admitted student events, and orientation.
  • Support alumni on an as-needed basis throughout the year.
  • Assist in creating and executing special projects, which may include career treks, as needed.
