The Hartford Actuarial Associate or Sr. Consultant Actuarial - Middle Market Property in New York, New York

* Please note, candidates pursuing exams as well as those not pursuing exams will be considered for this role. This role can be part of our Actuarial Student Program for a near/recent ACAS pursuing their FCAS designation.*

This is a key role that supports the General Industries Property team within the Middle & Large Commercial Actuarial department. This is a strong individual contributor role which supports several customers both within the Actuarial, Underwriting, Product, ERM, Finance, and Reserving areas. This position will closely partner with these areas to deliver profit and growth goals, as well as assist in enhancing our rating methodology. The position also supports the delivery of key segment projects, providing analysis and offering book monitoring insights which accomplish business segment goals.

This position is ideal for someone who is looking to gain expertise working in a line of business, has a desire to influence the business and drive new and sophisticated rate/pricing/profitability analyses and tools across the organization.

Opportunities

  • Leadership: Develop project strategy and tactics and gain confidence to develop solutions. Consistently provide input into team-driven solutions, and implement/maintain these solutions with appropriate parties.

  • Project Management: Aid in the creation of project timelines to identify bottlenecks and risks and appropriately prioritize competing projects.

  • Communication: Plan and execute communication strategies, lead key meetings to drive action and decision making, and deliver periodic presentations to Product/UW partners.

  • Analytical/Technical: Leverage R/SQL skills to enhance the team’s efficiency, provide new insights into book performance, and gain exposure to predictive and catastrophe model development and implementation.

  • Non-Actuarial: Bolster knowledge of Product Development, UW, Forms, Claims, and IT.

    Responsibilities

  • Provide actuarial opinions on profitability, including rate and price guidance, with an eye towards enhancing tools.

  • Provide support in the launch of a new class plan

  • Provide support for and enhance the calculations/analyses underlying the rating / pricing methodology.

  • Work closely with the Product team to set a forward-looking strategy.

  • Conduct sophisticated financial / actuarial analyses and effectively communicate findings and recommendations to business partners; drive and enhance the partnership between Actuarial and the business functions.

  • Manage the monthly monitoring of growth and profitability metrics and communicate the results.

  • Lead the analysis, selections, and communications of our core Actuarial work as needed including Trend, Loss Ratio Projections, Rate Filings, and Profitability Reporting.

    Experience & Skills

  • Minimum of 3-5+ years of actuarial experience with exposure to P&C Insurance a plus.

  • Near or recent ACAS/FCAS or individuals with actuarial experience not pursuing exams.

  • Strong technical, analytical and data skills; Excel required and experience with SQL/R preferred.

  • Self-motivated and results-oriented with the ability to manage time effectively in an environment with multiple priorities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to audiences of various levels and diverse technical backgrounds, and to influence business partners to achieve optimal outcomes.

  • Proactive individual, with demonstrated creativity and innovation, who can drive a process to a conclusion while meeting critical deadlines.
