New York Genome Center Accounting Manager in New York, New York

Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Manager is responsible for performing not-for-profit accounting and analytical work at the New York Genome Center and reviewing the work of junior colleagues and interns. This is a hands-on role that requires an individual who can perform activities themselves without significant delegation.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Complete daily and monthly accounting activities, including:

  • Maintain the prepaid schedule and prepare the associated monthly and annual accruals;

  • Maintain and update pledge receivable and restricted gifts schedules and reconcile with Development monthly;

  • Ensure timely completion of other monthly close processes, such as fixed asset additions and depreciation, prepaid amortization, interest expense accruals, and capital leases;

  • Perform a variety of other review and approvals, such as bank reconciliations, AMEX/Concur expense and credit card reconciliations, scheduled payment of checks and wires; and

  • Prepare journal entries to ensure proper accounting treatment and proper support (revenue recognition, new pledges, etc);

  • Review and assist with monitoring AP aging schedules;

  • Manage the fixed assets process, including executing physical inventory counts, capitalization and depreciation of assets, monitoring transfers and disposals;

  • Responsible for the annual filing of the 1099s;

  • Liaise with Development to properly account for donor gifts and assist with donor reports and related schedules;

  • Support the annual financial statement audit and compilation of the 990s;

  • Assist with and serve as back-up for Accounts Payables approval, inventory count and WIP calculations;

  • Design new business processes and policies with the implementation of new ERP system;

  • Support the Senior Accounting Manager with overall preparation for timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close and financial audits, including preparation of schedules for the footnotes; and

  • Train, coach, mentor more junior accounting staff on departmental processes, including business processes and controls, and the accounting system.

Job Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting required, and CPA highly preferred;

  • 8 or more years of accounting or audit experience required;

  • Big 4 experience, including experience in multiple clients across different industries, desired;

  • Not-for-profit experience, including revenue recognition experience, highly preferred;

  • Strong technical accounting experience, including financial statement preparation and design of effective internal controls;

  • Effective communication skills and the presence to engage others; and,

  • A hands-on attitude with the willingness to “roll up your sleeves” and do the work that is required.

Work Flexibility

NYGC has established a flexible work policy to give employees and other staff more ability to balance their work, personal commitments, and commuting challenges. The incumbent in this position is eligible for a flexible work schedule or hybrid remote work arrangement with supervisory approval.The position requires at least 1-2 days working onsite each week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Salary & Benefits

The pay range for this position is $99,000-$130,000 per year; the base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

About the New York Genome Center

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), and cancer.

Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with the leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions. Essential to our collaborative work is an outstanding faculty, whose members typically hold a joint appointment at NYGC and a partner university.
