General Description
CUNY Building Performance Lab (CUNY BPL) advances high-performance building operations and practices in existing commercial, public, and multi-family residential buildings. We focus on improving efficiency and optimizing building operations through training, coaching, energy data analytics (monthly and real-time meter data), building energy modeling (EnergyPlus and others), measurement and verification (IPMVP and ASHRAE protocols), HVAC systems, building controls, data acquisition (via BAS or field equipment), and operational improvements via Pacific Northwest National Lab’s Building Re-tuning protocol.
The CUNY BPL Training Department provides continuing education programs for facility managers, building operators, and energy professionals, and it supports building operations research and development. CUNY BPL also runs an extensive internship program for CUNY students that provides real world experience and hands-on work in each of the organization’s program areas.
CUNY BPL staff have expertise in a wide range of areas related to building systems, operations and data. CUNY BPL Training engages in both private sector and public sector clients including city, state, and federal agencies.
General Description:
CUNY BPL is hiring a Senior HVAC Engineer to support multiple projects for the CUNY BPL Training Department. This staff member will be central to CUNY BPL’s training organization by being involved in training and coaching programs, assessing the performance of HVAC systems and controls, client discussions, and curriculum development.
Other Duties
Job activities include some or all of the following, as required:
Use Building Automation System (BAS) data to assess HVAC systems and their controls to recommend changes in operations and/or simple upgrades to improve performance
Participate in site visit surveys and BAS assessments required for training and coaching activities
Create new / modify existing curricula as needed; develop CUNY BPL training resources, e.g., case studies, playbooks, and energy savings calculation methodologies
Support development of new, and maintenance of existing, training partnerships and industry outreach initiatives
Prepare summary reports and reviews for training and coaching sessions
Assume project management responsibilities
Duties may expand to include training and/or coaching commercial and multifamily building operators and energy managers, as well as building owners and property managers; courses may include Building Operator Certification (for commercial/institutional building operators), BuildingCoach and Building Re-tuning coaching classes, Building Operator Training (for multifamily), and Building Energy Compliance seminars (owners/property managers)

Qualifications
Strong candidates will bring the following education, skills, and experience to this position:
Knowledge of commercial HVAC system operations, including air systems, central heating and cooling plant, air and water distribution systems, sequences of operations, and controls
Working knowledge of Building Automation Systems
Minimum three years of experience with existing building systems in a design, commissioning and/or operational capacity
Experience working with building operators and energy professionals on HVAC related energy efficiency projects
Experience developing training materials, including using Learning Management Systems for both synchronous and asynchronous course delivery
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering (mechanical, energy, electrical, facilities) or operations, a related field, or equivalent study and experience
Familiarity with project management operations, including project planning, scope development, project tracking, and close-out
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Certified Energy Manager (CEM); Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP) or Existing Building Commissioning Professional (EBCP) credentials a plus
Familiarity with NYC energy code a plus
Familiarity with the NYC real estate market and stakeholders a plus
Technical training experience a plus
