POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Specialist is expected to practice and exemplify the best practices and principles of management of staff and programs as indicated by their higher level of training/certification in their area of specialty. Assists in developing, organizing and implementing high quality YMCA program(s).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop and deliver programming for the assigned area of specialty that incorporate basic youth development principles where learning is the principal factor and with the Y’s focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

  • Implement approved creative lesson plans that encourage participation and the acquisition of new skills.

  • Provide training and guidance to staff on how to assist with specialty activity.

  • Coordinate with the branch leadership for request of program supplies. May review and process program scholarship applications.

  • Ensure the safety of all children enrolled in the program by following the supervision standards in the Code of Conduct.

  • Follow YMCA protocols for dealing with First-Aid and emergency situations. Complete necessary paperwork such as incident reports, medical log, etc.

  • Use positive group management techniques. Anticipate and deal with behavior problems in accordance with YMCA’s Discipline and Expulsion Policy.

  • Build professional relationships with children, and parents.

  • Promote Y Programs, to families, and assist with planning and implementation of special events, including Annual Campaign.

  • Attend all YMCA training and meetings as required.

  • Assist with planning and implementation of special events.

  • Perform other job-related duties as requested and necessary.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field or certification in area of specialization

  • Curriculum planning.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communication with all levels including staff, and parents.

  • Ability to relate effectively and deliver outstanding customer services to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

  • Ability to problem solve and make decisions that adhere to the purpose, mission and goals of the YMCA.

  • Strong organizational skills, detail oriented, and planning skills.

  • 1-3 years Supervisory experience recommended.

  • 1-3 years working with school age children in a group setting.

  • CPR, First Aid and AED certifications may be required.

  • Experience adhering to Licensing requirements.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations. This work requires the following physical activities: bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
