General Scope of Duties

Connecticut College is a highly selective, private, coeducational liberal arts college located in southern New England overlooking the Long Island Sound and the Thames River in the historic seaport of New London, Connecticut. Founded in 1911, the College enrolls 1900 students from 42 states and 70 countries. The 750-acre campus is an arboretum, and is supported by a staff and faculty of more than 800. The Assistant Director for Residential Life, North Campus is responsible for the supervision of approximately 30 paraprofessionals to develop communities that promote the safety, belonging and wellbeing of approximately 950 undergraduate students living in over 13 unique residential communities. North campus is comprised of Morrisson, Lamdin, Hamilton, Park, Wright, Johnson, Katharine Blunt, Larrabee, Smith, Burdick, and Branford. The area has all class years represented with a heavy concentration of first year students within the buildings. The assistant director has a collateral assignment with Student Engagement This is a twelve-month, live-in position. Night and weekend hours required. Ability and willingness to work nights and weekend hours as required, along with occasional holidays on-call.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative oversight, leadership, and community development to North Campus area

  • Hire, train, supervise, develop and evaluate Lead RAs, RA, and Community Assistants.

  • Maintain frequent and regular contact with the student residence hall staff through individual meetings, area meetings, e-mail, and phone contact

  • Develop healthy, engaged and inclusive communities by fostering a supportive environment focusing on student development

  • Assist students in academic and social adjustment to Connecticut College; assist in developing individual responsibility, personal growth and social awareness

  • Work collaboratively in the development of residential learning communities

  • Assist with housing selection, housing assignments, and other Residential Life department initiatives and processes including move-in.

  • Facilitate student mediations, room changes and coordinate with Associate Director any changes to assignments

  • Serve in the on-call administrative team responding to student needs, emergencies during and after hours as the first tier professional staff response

  • Oversee the enforcement of all College rules and regulations on campus for all students

  • Support the curricular model of the office, as well as the Division of Student Life

  • Oversee respective area programming efforts and foster meaningful opportunities for student engagement. Administer area programming budget and tracking.

  • Assist with program and event implementation as needed by the Office of Student Life, Student Engagement, and Campus Life

  • Monitor physical condition of building(s) on a regular basis and work collaboratively to identify and resolve problems.

  • Act as a representative for the department of Residential Life when engaging with campus partners, students, and families.

  • Participate in the planning, development and facilitation of regular in-service, training and student staff development.

  • Regularly meet with student staff for development, staff meetings, coaching to ensure the student staff are successful

    Education and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Previous experience in residential life preferred or other applicable experience required

  • Capable of handling confidential/private information with a high level of integrity

  • Proven ability to build and sustain positive relationships with students, families, faculty and peers

  • Must be available to live on/in campus housing, work various evening, overnight weekend and occasional holidays

  • Valid driver licenses and ability to routinely travel to satellite housing approximately 2 miles from the main campus, or nearby hospital for student checks

  • Well-organized, able to work under pressure adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously and as a member of a team

  • Ability to interact well with a variety of people from all aspects of the college and community

  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, equity and inclusion

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver training programs

  • Light travel necessary (Ex. Program shopping, on-call hospital follow-ups with students).

  • Must have excellent communications skills and ability to remain customer service centered when dealing in high pressure situations

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred

  • 2 or more years as a Residence Hall Director, or experience working in Residential Life

  • Commitment to foster inclusive residential communities, demonstrated experience or passion for supporting equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives
