Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Communications for University Finance and Administration (UFA). Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Financial Initiatives and Chief of Staff, this role offers an exciting opportunity for a seasoned communications professional with excellent leadership skills to shape the voice of a critical universitywide division.
Working collaboratively with units and teams within the division, as well as with institutional and external partners, the director will develop and implement a strategic communications plan for UFA that unifies and modernizes the division's approach to internal and external communications, while championing best practices and ensuring compliance with university guidance and policies.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Shapes and leads the overarching communications strategy for the division, establishing a clear, authentic, and cohesive tone for the organization and effective communication of key messages, which may be time-sensitive and highly-technical, to internal and external stakeholders. Serves as the central point-of-contact and strategic lead for all UFA communications.
  • Oversees content creation and dissemination, working closely with colleagues in UFA to ensure strategic alignment, high-quality output, and effective engagement with target audiences across all communication platforms.
  • Amplifies the work of the division through strategic and targeted external outreach, helps advance the division's values and guiding principles, and promotes staff engagement through robust, integrated internal communication strategies.
  • Manages processes, tools, and projects related to communications of all types, including official division email accounts, routine messaging, time-sensitive notifications, leadership communications, newsletters, websites and web-based content, events, and publications.
  • Leads the division's communications team, setting clear expectations, offering guidance and mentorship, and supporting professional growth and development. Fosters a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and inclusion, while proactively addressing challenges and empowering team members to excel.
  • Enhances the quality of division communication by providing leadership, education, and resources to support UFA staff in their communication efforts.

The ideal candidate will have experience managing proactive and effective communications and marketing strategies, the ability to engage and communicate with diverse audiences both internal and external to the organization, and strong leadership abilities to inspire and guide a team towards success.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in English, journalism, marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge, skill, and understanding of writing, editing, proofreading, publishing, organizational coordination, and/or facilitation.
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience in an organization involving a significant number of people with diverse and varied interests and backgrounds, including demonstrated supervisory experience managing and developing teams effectively.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proven experience with strategic planning, communications and brand management, and/or marketing and media relations.
  • Experience with the creative use of a variety of channels for communication.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and influence others, and manage teams with varying skill levels and backgrounds.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, with excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams and in a changing environment.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Familiarity with business and finance functions and concepts.
  • Experience in Drupal or other web content management systems.
