Craven County Government Advanced Practice Provider II, Maternity (11005) in New Bern, North Carolina

Primary Purpose

  • The primary purpose of this position is to render prenatal and postpartum care, diagnose and manage common gynecological problems as outlined in the medical protocol as well as provide physical assessment and referrals under the guidelines of the Maternal Child Health Section of the Division of Health Services and the Supervising Physician.

Essential Functions

75%

  • For all High-Risk and non-High-Risk Maternity patients completes medical history, physical, HIV counseling, cervical checks, routine prenatal assessment, determination of the need for medical intervention, referral of questionable findings, orders both routine and specialized testing such as ultrasound, EKG, Lab work, and other procedures.
  • Prescribes and dispenses medications as permitted by standing orders and as covered in NP protocols.
  • Also arranges for post term patients to be induced and for repeat C-Sections to be scheduled.
  • Review lab and x-ray findings and make recommendations as appropriate.
  • Attends High-Risk conference monthly.
  • Educate High-Risk patients about their High-Risk condition.
  • Make return appointments on all patients seen.
  • Review all Lab studies and monitor NST's as needed.

  • Maintains protocols and care plans for High-Risk patients.
  • Diagnoses and manages common GYN-OB problems as outlined in medical protocol.
  • Physicians are available for consultation/referrals on site or per telephone.
  • Patients with serious, urgent problems with no source of primary health care are referred for emergency service to local ER.
  • Works with all physicians that deliver CCHD Maternity patients.
  • Handles problems appropriate for scope of practice.
  • Also completes follow-up to regular maternity patients the same as for High-Risk maternity patients as seen above.
  • See postpartum patients in clinic to check C-Section incision, B/P checks, anemia, or other related problems.

  • Sees Family Planning patients as needed, this includes history taking, teaching, physical assessment on initial visit and on interim visits per protocol.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of some GYN problems per protocol.
  • Referral to emergency care if problem is serious and patient has no source of primary health care.
  • Prescribe birth control methods and perform Physical Assessment on adult clients.

  • Serve as a preceptor for Nurse Practitioner students who need clinical guidance and supervision for periods ranging from six (6) to twelve (12) weeks duration after practicing for a period of one year.

  • In the event of a disaster will be assigned to a Red Cross Shelter to function as a Health Care Professional.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Deputy Health Director/Director of Nursing, and Health Director.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Medical Board or approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board.
  • One year experience as an Advanced Practice Provider.
