Nevada County is nestled in California’s Sierra Nevada foothills, about an hour outside Sacramento and two hours from the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a rare opportunity to join the Nevada County Team as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist. You will be working with a friendly and inclusive group of well-rounded Environmental Health Specialists and Technicians who, maintain work-life balance through a variety of activities from backpacking, camping, and traveling to art and literature.

Environmental Health Team members primarily interpret, implement, and enforce local, state, and federal laws for the protection of public health and safety for our residents and visitors. The ideal Environmental Health Specialist is well-rounded, possessing strong customer service and technical skills, in addition to experience managing special projects, analyzing current procedural processes, and implementing improvements.

Ideal candidate will have three years’ experience as an Environmental Health Specialist, including at least two years in a class comparable to Environmental Health Specialist II with the County of Nevada, and one year of specialized experience in consumer protection, land use or hazardous material control. A master’s degree in public health or a Biological, Physical or Chemical Science may be substituted for one year of experience as an Environmental Health Specialist II.

Retirement

The County is a member of the CalPERS retirement system and provides the opportunity for voluntary contributions to a 457 deferred compensation account through Nationwide by way of pre-tax and Roth payroll deductions.

    The Environmental Health Specialist III is the advanced-journey level in the class series fully qualified to independently perform the more difficult, complex and sensitive inspections and investigations. Incumbents exercise considerable independent judgement in conducting environmental health or hazardous materials inspection and enforcement activities. Duties include but not limited to preparing and presenting cases for hearings; appearing in court and giving testimony and evidence in cases involving environmental health and hazardous materials violations. In addition, collects samples of soil, liquid to evaluate the presence of hazardous contaminants and interpret their results; participates in infectious disease control and/or hazardous materials investigations.
