Position Summary/Description:

The Executive Director of Transportation and Parking serves as the University’s strategic advisor and chief resource for transportation services, parking operations, and transportation strategic planning. This position serves as the University’s representative on multiple community planning and governance committees and oversees a team of individuals who support the operations and policy development for these areas. These include the major functional areas Transportation, Planning, and Parking Operations, and shared oversight of Fiscal Services. The position has direct authority to manage and negotiate with entities on the Chapel Hill Transit ( CHT ) Partnership. The Executive Director also leads the University’s transportation and parking functions during large-scale campus events, such as athletic events and celebrations, and maintains transportation functions and infrastructure during campus emergencies in accordance with Emergency Support Function ( ESF ) # 1 protocols. The position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Real Estate and Campus Enterprises.

Education and Experience:

Advanced degree in business administration, public administration or transportation or planning-related field.

Experience in managing parking and transit systems in a university or non-profit setting, including the maintenance management for parking facilities.

Understanding of the National Incident Management System ( NIMS ).

Essential Skills:

A minimum of 10 years of experience in transportation planning, parking services administration, or related fields such as planning, policy, change management, environmental or resource management, or facilities; 8 to 10 years of experience is acceptable for candidates with an advanced degree.

The successful candidate must possess demonstrated leadership and team-building skills; advanced knowledge of urban planning or transportation planning and best practices; progressively responsible experience in parking and transportation operations; political acumen in understanding and negotiating organizational complexity ; experience with short- and long-term budget forecasting; advanced project management experience; and exceptional communication, customer service, and collaboration skills.
