Google Staff Network Performance Engineer in Nashville, Tennessee

At GFiber, the Network Planning and Engineering team has the crucial task of creating a powerful network that can provide top-notch wireline and wireless technologies for both residential and commercial customers.

Role Description

As a Staff Network Performance Engineer, you’ll own outcomes for multiple projects that have a high impact on the performance of our network, keeping projects moving forward to timely completion through sound judgment on quality versus readiness tradeoffs, creating consensus cross-functionally, and implementing a comprehensive vision on critical roadmap issues. You’ll use your deep expertise in the fields of network engineering, analytics, data science, and AI/Machine Learning to develop new approaches to technological trends and measure their key performance indicators (KPIs). You’ll collaborate across projects and teams to ensure alignment, helping your colleagues think through ambiguous technical problems. You are adept at harmonizing disparate processes and data and creating new solutions to old problems.

In this role, you'll:

  • Develop and implement analytics and data science methodologies to monitor and optimize end-to-end network performance including creating foundational pipelines for data extractions from different network nodes.

  • Utilize machine learning tools to build predictive models and identify performance trends.

  • Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure network reliability, efficiency, and quality.

  • Gather and analyze performance data with network performance tools.

  • Work collaboratively with other teams across functions (e.g., developers, network operations, network architecture) to identify and address next generation networking needs, and lead joint efforts to collaborate on roadmaps for new projects, schedules, and measurables.

  • Provide detailed performance reports and insights to stakeholders, highlighting areas of improvement and recommending actionable steps.

  • Stay updated on the latest trends and best practices in network performance monitoring and optimization.

At a minimum we'd like you to have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 7 years of experience in network performance engineering, with a focus on using analytics and data science tools (Python, R, SQL, etc).

  • 3 years of experience in using machine learning tools and techniques to analyze network performance data.

  • 5 years of experience with network protocols and technologies, including IP, SDN, NFV, L2/L3 LAN/WAN protocols, BGP, MPLS, QoS, and network virtualization.

  • Ability to interpret complex data sets and identify actionable insights in the networking domain.

It's preferred if you have:

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science with a background in service-provider networking design.

  • Experience operating with telecom / internet service provider networks.

  • Familiarity with machine learning and predictive modeling.

  • 3 years experience with network performance tools such as Wireshark, Nokia DeepField, Cisco ThousandEyes, and NetCracker Network Performance systems.

  • Experience with broadband access network equipment, especially Fiber the to Home (FTTH) systems.

  • Ability to use written and verbal communication to present complex technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $164,000 $241,000 + bonus + cash award + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
