Amazon Sr. Operations Design Engineer, AMXL FC and IXD Design in Nashville, Tennessee

Description

The Amazon supply chain team is looking for an Operations Engineer to support the Amazon Extra Large (XL) FC Capacity Planning team. This individual will be responsible for designing, managing and executing the next generation of XL fulfillment center processes, equipment, and operations. This is a unique opportunity to own new innovation projects that will advance our heavy/bulky business.

We are looking for a passionate hands-on leader with technical and analytic experience, with strong background in warehouse design and/or equivalent in manufacturing, production or distribution environments who can effectively innovate on behalf of the customer in a fast-paced environment. In this role, you will collaborate with internal and external teams to design high quality, cost effective solutions for our fulfillment and distribution systems. You will own multiple projects simultaneously, from concept realization through design approval. You will be our technical single threaded leader technical contact for your projects until the concept is handed over to our Worldwide design team. You will oversee the process from end-to end making sure the designs adhere to the expected concept, which gets completed, approved, and eventually hand-off to our GES Ops Engineering team who will oversee the installation and commissioning of the project. You’ll support that team to ensure that design is delivered as per the Building Requirement Specifications.

Your projects may include green-fields, brown-fields, and retrofits, including highly automated fulfillment centers, cross-dock facilities, and transportation centers. Your projects will be a variety of template-based and designed-from-scratch.

Up to 15% travel required.

Key job responsibilities

  • Drive standardization, documentation of core design and process elements for scalable network growth across the worldwide AMXL business using strong process management and Lean principles

  • Drive implementation and adoption of new design innovations across multiple regions

  • Identify innovations and perform experiments to create processes that increase customer value; determine root causes of "defects" in performance through deep dive data analysis and decomposition and process observation

  • Own and deliver on post-launch reviews and customer feedback, and incorporate feedback into future project plans

  • Collaborate with counterparts in other functional areas as required (S&OP, Operations Integration, Transportation, Sort Centers, Delivery Stations, Site Launch, Procurement, etc.) in support of network initiatives

  • Define the project objectives, analyze data and drive improvements that are quantified with metrics

  • Work autonomously in an ambiguous environment, seeking to understand business problems, automation limitations, scaling factors, boundary conditions and reasons behind leadership decisions

  • Partner with teams across the business you support and beyond to source, allocate, and coordinate resources

  • Partner with customers, internal/external teams, and engineering teams to determine what projects move forward and in what priority order

  • Oversee gaps between teams, processes and systems, helping teams reduce exposure to classic failure modes (e.g., requirements not sufficiently understood or documented, ineffective cross-team collaboration, long-term impact(s) from third-party solutions, security not considered, insufficient stakeholder review, etc.)

  • Solve problems and proactively identify and mitigate risks (before they become roadblocks)

  • Work with program managers, business leaders and executive team to communicate and impact critical business initiatives

  • Develop, implement, and govern KPI reporting for a portfolio of programs, providing visibility to the milestones, and performance across all projects

  • Engage other Amazon business units globally to share best practices and improve end to end outcomes for Amazon customers

A day in the life

This role is very dynamic and not single day is the same. A typical day will include working towards long term team goals and adhere to planning cycle timelines to make sure all deliverables are met. The day will be focused on deep dive data, coming up with design improvements and PM design initiatives to get stakeholder alignments.

About the team

You will be part of AMXL (Heavy bulky) Fulfillment Center (FC) and Cross Dock Design team which works on long term capacity requirements and develops design concepts to improve efficiency and optimize the overall fixed cost for our FC network.

Basic Qualifications

• Master's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Supply Chain, Design) or Bachelors degree with 8+ years of experience in related field, or 5+ years Amazon experience in similar space.

• 5+ years of experience in Design/Innovation Engineering, Manufacturing/Process/Industrial Engineering, or related

• Experience must involve ownership/management of engineering design projects.

• 5+ Experience using business/technical software like MS Excel, MS Project, and CAD software.

• 3+ years experience in using data analytics and visualization tools (Quicksight, Power BI, Tableau etc)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with complex automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, robotics and/or high-speed manufacturing

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, VBA, and SQL at the intermediate level

  • Proficiency with communicating with data and data storytelling through dashboards, automated SQL reports, and visualizations

  • Experience managing projects across cross functional teams, building sustainable processes and mechanisms

  • Experience defining KPI's/SLA's used to drive multi-million dollar businesses and reporting to senior leadership

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $118,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $205,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
