Vanderbilt University Program Manager, Academic & Educational Support, MED Lab in Nashville, Tennessee

The Program Manager is part of the Medical Engineering and Discovery Laboratory (MED lab) within the Mechanical Engineering department at Vanderbilt University. This person is a key individual responsible for supporting a surgical robotics grant and its principal investigator, Robert J. Webster, III. Dr. Robert Webster’s Medical Engineering and Discovery Laboratory (MED lab) focuses on surgical robotics and on other devices to make surgery less invasive and more accurate. The MED Lab is a place where doctors and engineers work side by side to create new lifesaving medical technologies led by Vanderbilt University. This typically begins with a focus on the clinical problem first, and then work with surgeon collaborators to determine the best devices and theoretical approaches to solve it.

The Mechanical Engineering department provides a broad-based engineering education with opportunities for students to elect courses in areas of study related to any industry and, with careful planning achieve some specialization. The mechanical engineering program prepares an individual to become a practicing engineer who can participate fully in the engineering activities of design, building, operation, production, maintenance, safety, marketing, sales, research, and administration. Numerous research projects allow faculty and students to collaborate in areas of combustion and propulsion, robotic surgery, powered prosthetics, nanotechnology, thermal fluids and medical devices.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day project operations and coordination (20%)

  • Work closely with Prof. Webster and the investigative teams across three universities (15%)

  • Ensure project milestones are met (10%)

  • Monitor, project, and reconcile project expenditures/balances (10%)

  • Maintain high-level data for the project (15%)

  • Draft reports related to the project (15%)

  • Assist with correspondence and meetings between the project team and grant funding agencies (10%)

  • Other project tasks as assigned (5%)

Supervisory Relationships: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Senior Program Manager and collaborates directly with the principal investigator.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in an engineering field from an accredited institution of higher education is required.

  • A master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is preferred.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience managing complex programs with multiple partners and minimal oversight.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Extremely well organized with excellent time management skills and the ability to successfully

  • The ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Proficient in office software tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and other software

  • Experience with tools for communication, data collection/analysis, and office operations

  • Positive, collaborative, “can-do,” attitude with a passion for innovation and creativity
