Position Description
The Police Crisis Counselor shall serve as a counselor for the Family Intervention Program/Division (FIP) of the Interpersonal Crimes Branch in the Investigative Services Bureau of the Metro Nashville Police Department and shall be directly accountable to the FIP Counseling Supervisor for the proper administration of duties. This position performs the professional duties involved in providing counseling to victims of crime, their children and non-perpetrating family members during and following crisis situations and advises police officers on the best way to handle victims of crime and other emotionally stressed individuals.
The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is a 24/7/365 operation. Typical Duties
Counsels victims and/or their families including their children.
Refers individuals or families who are out of our scope of practice to appropriate agencies.
Develops treatment plans with behavioral and situational objectives.
Conducts follow-up counseling on a weekly or biweekly basis as indicated by the victim’s needs.
Instructs Police Trainees and Officers as to the techniques involved in crises counseling, victimization, and handling of emotionally distressed individuals.
Serves as an advocate for victims through Police and court proceedings.
Speaks to professional and other community groups.
Acts as a liaison between the Police Department and local mental health agencies and hospitals.
Keeps abreast of current techniques and procedures used in handling crisis situations.
Conducts counseling groups.
Provides 24/7 on-call in the team rotation to victims of crime.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master's Degree in a field of Behavioral Science, such as Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field from an accredited college or university and two (2) year of clinical counseling experience in a mental health related setting.

LICENSES REQUIRED
Valid Driver's License.
Must maintain certification or licensing in a counseling related field at a minimum of the Master’s level from the State of Tennessee.
Failure to maintain the required licensing or certification may result in termination.
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with evidence-based treatment approaches for child trauma victims
Experience in Trauma-Informed counseling interventions
Experience with court and various aspects of the Criminal Justice System
