Job Summary and Qualifications

This is an integral position within HCA Healthcare’s Risk & Insurance department and on behalf of the insurance company subsidiary Health Care Indemnity, Inc. (HCI) reporting directly to the Manager of Physician Programs. This position supports the Physician Insurance Programs segment of the Risk & Insurance Department through analyzing medical malpractice application requests, special project assignments, analyzing process improvement opportunities, conducting database management and quality controls of the physician, property builders’ risk and bond program. The Associate Underwriter gathers information throughout the system, maintaining database integrity for the corporate sponsored insurance programs. They provide customer support and problem solving assistance to facilities, physician practices and joint ventures on insurance-related issues and questions. In addition they assist the fellow Underwriters and Insurance team as needed and lead on other special projects.

Responsibilities

Conduct thorough analysis of all incoming provider medical malpractice application and enrollment request from HCI “customers” which include hospitals, physician practices, special joint ventures and 3 rd party contracted groups. Communicates with these “customer” contacts to complete outstanding or missing information and complete the underwriting file in order for underwriter review. Makes initial determinations on need for prior acts coverage/tail information, need for elevation for immediate underwriter review due to prior risk or prior state exposure concerns. Makes determination for enrollment in any state compensation funds.

Manages location database for provider exposures, issue initial and any follow-up requests for certificates of insurance to practices/hospitals/centralized credentialing centers. Also provides back-up support for requests for general liability certificates. Conducts ongoing quality assessments of database for accuracy. Responds to critical and rush demands based on nature of hospital and payor (insurance company) privileging schedule demands.

Request and collects relevant information from across the enterprise that supports the underwriting process for procurement and maintenance of the corporate-placed insurance programs, to include professional liability, auto and workers’ compensation, directors/officers, errors/omissions and cyber programs

Manages ongoing coordination with business operating groups (hospitals, physician practices, special JV partners) for determination of any unreported provider additions or terminations.

Assist the Manager of Physician Programs and VP of Insurance in daily operations as well as special projects including annual rate project. Annual rate project entails obtaining and analyzing other insurance carriers’ rate, class or other material changes in their periodic state filings on a state by state, class by class basis. Analysis to include summary findings and coordination with underwriting team to create recommendations to VP of Insurance for potential change considerations for HCI’s own rate filings.

Conducts boiler inspections and field engineering questions as the liaison between the facilities, the property carrier(s) and the third party engineering contractor. Elevate any outstanding recommendations to the facility and the Manager of Insurance Programs at designated intervals.

Conducts periodic assessment of underwriting intake and certificate issuance processes and provides process improvement feedback to Director of Insurance.

Assist with providing accurate and timely data enhancement on the property database with our broker and risk information management vendor(s).

Be cross-trained to assume responsibilities of and provide back-up assistance to the team as respects the corporate bond program by requesting bond placements and bond invoice processing.

Education & Experience

Bachelors Degree preferred

1+ year(s) of experience in relevant work experience. Experience specific to property & casualty (ideally medical malpractice) is preferred.

Excellent communication, organizational, computer (spreadsheet and database management), presentation skills and excellent customer service skills.

Insurance certification and/or Property & Causality Insurance Broker license preferred
