Position Description

The Metropolitan Public Defender’s Office represents adults accused of crimes in Davidson County who cannot afford to hire a lawyer, and children in Davidson County charged with being delinquent and unable to hire a lawyer. Cases range from the simplest misdemeanor to complex capital murder cases. Our mission is to defend the liberty, honor and constitutional rights of the individuals, of all ages, whose cases have been entrusted to us. Through zealous advocacy, we strive not only to deliver excellence in our representation of each and every client, but also to stand with our clients and the community in working to create a more just, fair and compassionate legal system. This is a non-Civil Service announcement. Performs specialized administrative and advanced litigation and non-litigation duties as an Assistant Supervisor of the Intake and General Sessions Courts Team of Legal Assistants employed by the Office of the Metropolitan Public Defender. Performs related duties as required.

Typical Duties

  • General Sessions Courts Docket Preparation and Processing

  • Monitoring PD Docket Manager Email Account and defenderData alerts to respond timely to requests as needed in order to maintain accurate records in our electronic case management system, defenderData (dD) and the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS).

  • Ongoing maintenance of the calendar of dockets to ensure all have been turned in and accounted for in a timely manner.

  • Generally: Analyzing cases for conflict checks, attorney assignment, updating defenderData and the Criminal Justice Information System, scanning, printing, and collecting dockets returned from court with attorneys

  • File Management

  • Accurately perform all processes for necessary record keeping in defenderData including opening, closing, updating electronic files in defender Data, creating paper files for attorneys, and importing information from CJIS to dD.

  • Assist with Intake and Reception

  • Conduct intake assessments, greet clients and guests, answer phone calls, and assist clients and other members of the public.

  • Maintain CJIS to accurately reflect appointed attorneys assigned to conflict cases through communication with the General Sessions Judges’ secretaries

  • Assist with Management and Operation of Intake Team

  • Foster and maintain good working relationships alongside GS Teams Administrator with General Sessions Court staff and the staff of the Criminal Court Clerk’s Office

  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with all Intake Team Members and assist with team management as directed by the GS Teams Administrator

  • Provide Legal Assistance to 2-3 General Sessions Attorneys

  • Monitor PD Docket Manager and PD Intake Team email addresses

  • Performs any other relevant tasks and duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Paralegal Certificate and at least two years of experience working in the Legal Field

Experience may be substituted for Education

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience working with the Davidson County General Sessions Courts

  • Spanish language fluency

  • CJIS Proficiency

  • Management Experience
