Southern Company Field Trainer I, II, Sr - System Operations in Naperville, Illinois

Note: this specific position will be primarily focused on training for the System Operations department and will focus on preparing candidates to successfully complete training and certification requirements.

The Field Operations Trainer provides specific, customized training to field operations personnel geared toward customer needs for the Southern Company Gas Operations Organization(s). The Trainer position is expected to mentor, evaluate, and prepare candidates to successfully complete operations training, safety training, technology training and any necessary certification requirements. This role is also responsible for on-going evaluation, development, and accuracy of training programs, and providing input on course content. The Trainer position is responsible for performing Operator Qualification evaluations (initial and requalification) and welding/joining qualifications to ensure alignment with federal guidelines. The Trainer position is also accountable for providing ongoing feedback, and communicating training and testing results to the employee, their supervisor and if necessary, the Training Manager. This specific position will be primarily focused on training for the System Operations department and will focus on preparing candidates to successfully complete training and certification requirements.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Trainer is responsible for mentoring, developing, and working with classes of field operations personal to reach the skills needed to successfully perform in the field operations position. The Trainer is responsible for modeling adult learning principles as appropriate for varied training environments (instructor-led, video, CBT/WBT, etc.) coupled with strong platform skills. The Trainer will use facilitation techniques to engage participants including the use of questioning, listening techniques and interventions that foster a safe learning environment. The Trainer is expected to facilitate and recommend improvements to course content to deliver credible learner-focused trainings to trainees. The Trainer conducts training pilot sessions to validate design methodology and provides objective feedback to training manager(s) and instructional designers for ongoing improvement. The Trainer demonstrates a thorough knowledge and understanding of specific operating areas and the gas industry, and how to evaluate learning or performance improvement solutions. The Trainer will also deliver interactive training programs for new policies, procedures, technology, and standards of performance with a strong focus on compliance training (OSHA, DOT, etc.). The Trainer is expected to collaborate with upper management within the organization to assist with developing Company-wide processes and procedures to train operations personnel on critical functions, including mutual aid and work stoppage events.

The Trainer must understand business processes and issues and how they relate to on-the-job application and demonstrate the ability and initiative to enhance training skills for inter-departmental progression. The Trainer will perform Operator Qualification evaluations (initial and requalification) and welding/joining qualifications, to ensure alignment with federal guidelines. The Trainer possesses strong project management skills and a strong knowledge of field operation applications used to support the business. The Trainer recommends any necessary updates/revisions to policies, procedures, and OPM.

The Trainer provides feedback to training leadership on curriculum and program development to ensure training effectiveness and the Trainer provides feedback on leadership/management programs delivered by external vendors. The Trainer manages classroom expectations (up to and including dismissal from class) regarding attendance, engagement, and interpersonal behaviors impacting the learning experience of employees within class and interacts with appropriate levels of leadership for instances involving any disciplinary issues that could potentially arise. The Trainer mentors other trainers for content delivery and knowledge expansion. The Trainer identifies and addresses issues that occur during the delivery of the course; keeping leadership informed. The Trainer actively participates in the evaluation of employee progress throughout the training course and is responsible for coaching and providing feedback to learners to ensure proper and safe procedures are followed. Ultimately, the Trainer is accountable for ensuring that learning objectives have been met through the training experience and that employees are coached on the skills or knowledge needed to remediate in instances of failures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • High School Diploma/Equivalent

Preferred:

  • BA/BS degree

  • 2+ years of facilitation skills development

  • Commercial Driver’s License (Class A)

  • Certified / Licensed technical or trade skills

    • Crane Training

    • Smith System Trainer Certification

    • Medic First Aid Trainer Certification

    • Powered Industrial Truck/Forklift Certification

    • DOT Flagger Certification

Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • Minimum 8+ years of field operations experience or minimum of 6+ years of field operations experience plus a minimum of 2+ years of training experience.

  • Extensive knowledge of systems and work procedures and Operator Qualifications.

Preferred:

  • Experience within System Operations Department

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Ability to lead internal teams for special projects and assignments.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • Knowledge in the areas of maintaining and operating the natural gas distribution system regulator stations, emergency valves, station equipment, crane operations and assist with specialized transmission training (control valve, water bath heater, odorizer, actuated valve and filter/separator operation and maintenance) .

  • Exhibit strong working knowledge of specific operating areas related to the gas industry.

  • Pipeline field operation experience.

  • Professional demeanor, solid written and verbal communication and customer service skills and knowledge of adult learning principals.

  • Exceptional presentation and training delivery/platform skills.

  • Excellent facilitation skills in diverse and dynamic environments.

  • Ability to “think on feet” and create relevant business examples to illustrate key training points.

  • Proficiency with Training Technology applications utilized to manage and deliver internal training content (LMS, FuelSchoolGo, iPads, etc.).

  • MS Office Suite – intermediate proficiency.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally with all levels of a diverse organization.

  • Ability to motivate and develop non-direct reports and deliver constructive feedback and ongoing individualized coaching.

  • Able to work well in a team-based setting.

  • Able to meet very tight deadlines in a fast-paced consistently changing environment.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional travel required depending on business needs and may require air travel and/or overnight stay for one or more nights.

Pay Range: 65,521.00 - 136,215.20 USD Annually: Base salary varies depending on a wide array of factors, which may include but are not limited to the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience.
