Job Title Director - Residence Life and Housing

Full Time/Part Time Full Time

General Job Description

This is a managerial position responsible for leading all campus residence life and housing functions, including on-campus housing operations, fiscal operations, facilities management, housing assignments, residence life staffing and management, and the critical development of the staff and students living on campus. Serves as the chief housing officer of the university and as a member of the divisional executive committee and leadership team. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Fosters an accessible and supportive residential environment for diverse student populations.

  2. Develops, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive housing plan sensitive to campus infrastructure and financial sustainability of its initiatives.

  3. Designs, creates, and executes a departmental strategic plan including facility long-term planning, residential education initiatives/curriculum, staff development, and assessment initiatives to improve quality of life in residence halls and meet university strategic initiatives/mission.

  4. Provides overall leadership to residence life team.

  5. Directs designated staff to promote living-learning programs and residential student learning outcomes.

  6. Oversees financial operations, including budget control and resource allocation.

  7. Resolves complaints and problems related to the department.

  8. Develops, implements, evaluates, and interprets all residence life policies, procedures, and contracts.

  9. Works collaboratively with other units across campus to develop and support student progress and retention initiatives for residential students.

  10. Oversees recruitment, training, and supervision of professional and student staff.

  11. Establishes departmental mission and goals with input from staff and students.

    Non-Essential Job Functions

  12. Represents the department on various departmental, divisional, and university committees.

  13. Works evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays when required.

  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or, using some other form of skills and abilities, be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university and departmental policies and procedures.

  2. Knowledge of best practices in residence life and housing occupancy.

  3. Knowledge of student development theory, student conduct, Title IX, and higher education trends and issues.

  4. Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.

  5. Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.

  6. Ability to employ evidence-based best practices to implement and evaluate residential living, student discipline, and student organization advising models.

  7. Ability to exercise professionalism and sound judgment in making critical decisions.

  8. Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and recommend effective solutions.

  9. Ability to manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.

  10. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  11. Ability to maintain collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and other university constituencies as well as the general public.

  12. Ability to work effectively and ethically across cultural differences.

  13. Ability to provide support for student development with a demonstrable concern for students.

  14. Ability to engage students and to create and enhance their connection to the institution and each other.

  15. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.

  16. Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.

  17. Ability to handle difficult or stressful situations with professional composure.

  18. Ability to train and supervise others.

  19. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

    Physical Demands

    Required Education

Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, or a related field is required.

Required Experience and Training

Five years of related experience is required. Experience in university residential life program operations and progressive experience in housing and residential life, including supervision of professional staff, is required. Experience with leading a multi-faceted business unit is required. Budget management experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with residential learning communities is preferred.

Salary Information Hiring Salary - $96,545, Salary Grade - 5

Benefit and Retirement Eligibility

This position is eligible for participation in the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ), subject to the position being full-time and at least 4 ½ months in length, or the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
