Position Summary:
The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician supports the hospital's pharmacy team in delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care to patients. They are responsible for preparing, dispensing, and distributing medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This role requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to ensuring safe and effective medication use within the hospital setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Medication Preparation and Dispensing:
Prepare and label medications, including intravenous (IV) solutions, unit-dose medications, and sterile compounding in compliance with regulatory standards.
Assist pharmacists in filling and dispensing medications accurately and efficiently.
Inventory Management:
Monitor and replenish medication inventory in automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) and pharmacy storage areas.
Conduct routine checks for expired or recalled medications and remove them from inventory.
Ensure proper storage and handling of medications, including temperature-sensitive items.
Patient Care Support:
Deliver medications to nursing units and other hospital departments in a timely manner.
Assist with medication reconciliation by reviewing and updating patient medication lists under pharmacist supervision.
Compliance and Documentation:
Maintain accurate records of medication dispensing, transfers, and returns.
Adhere to hospital policies, state and federal laws, and accreditation standards related to pharmacy operations.
Team Collaboration:
Collaborate with pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care.
Participate in departmental meetings and ongoing training to stay updated on best practices and new regulations.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a pharmacy technician training program preferred.
Certification/License:
Active Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) preferred.
Registration with the state board of pharmacy via LARA
Experience: Previous experience in an inpatient or hospital pharmacy setting is preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
Proficiency in pharmacy software and automated dispensing systems.
Strong knowledge of medical terminology and pharmacology basics.
Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, and move within the pharmacy and hospital for extended periods.
Capability to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds.
Manual dexterity to operate pharmacy equipment and handle small objects.
Work Schedule:
- Rotating shifts, including weekends, evenings, and holidays as required.
