National Park Service Maintenance Worker Leader (Trails) in Munising, Michigan

This position provides leadership and the daily scheduling of trail maintenance duties, minor maintenance and repair of grounds, and trails including but not limited to the campgrounds, and picnic areas. Responsibilities Incumbent will be responsible for the leadership and daily scheduling of trail maintenance duties, minor maintenance and repair trails including but not limited to campgrounds and picnic areas. Work leader will demonstrate proper work methods and work along with others to set a work pace. Ensuring safety and housekeeping rules are followed. Perform and oversee the full range of hands-on, day to day trails maintenance across the park. Build trail structures, organize the transportation of trail building supplies to job sites, and oversee the upkeep of back country campsites. Oversee or make needed repairs to damaged trail assets including but not limited to foot bridges, stairs, trail surface tread, board walks, back country pit toilets, cedar wood routed signs, turnpikes and water bars. Incumbent will maintain trail condition standards and assist the work supervisor to stock needed supplies. Work lead ensures necessary plans, materials, supplies, equipment, and tools are available when needed. Work leader will recommend operation needs to work supervisor per request. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 1800) and Grand Marais. The park encompasses 42 miles of Lake Superior shoreline and is renowned for its colorful sandstone cliffs, miles of beaches, waterfalls and streams, inland lakes, 100 miles of trails and the 1874 Au Sable Light Station. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The area is rich in public lands and outdoor opportunities. The duty stations for these positions are in Munising and Grand Marais. Government housing may be available for rent in Grand Marais. Amenities in Munising include grocery and convenience stores, medical clinic, and K-12 schools. Complete shopping and a regional medical center are in Marquette, Michigan, 43 miles west of Munising. Grand Marais has a population of less than 250 people and shopping is limited. Minimum Age: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or(c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading) Ability To Lead Or Supervise Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc. Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments SCREENOUT: - You must show you have led small work crews of 4 or fewer people in executing some of the tasks including instructing and overseeing crew members on the operation of equipment, trail maintenance best practices and ensuring crew members follow safety policies and procedures. You can execute difficult and complex trail construction and maintenance projects to the highest standards of durability, aesthetics, and safety of the crew. Experience with maintenance activities such as carpentry for building foot bridges, boardwalks, stairs, fences, bulletin boards, retaining walls, etc.; trail maintenance such as tree trimming/removal, pruning, trail tread maintenance and construction, trail drainage repair, maintenance and construction, etc.; concrete, masonry or stone work for trail tread, retaining walls, drainage structures, etc. as appropriate to this position. Experience instructing crew members on the operation of equipment, trail maintenance, as well as safety policies and procedures. Must have experience as a Maintenance Worker performing some tasks of maintenance and repair and/or construction tasks necessary for the operation, maintenance, and repair of grounds, trails, roads with skills in at least two of the following areas: basic carpentry, landscaping, masonry, equipment operation (i.e. truck and trailer, commercial mower, garden tractor, UTV) and trail maintenance under normal supervision. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations. Physical Demands: The incumbent must be in good physical condition. Must have the ability to lift and/ or carry items weighting up to 75 lbs. Frequent walking, standing, bending, twisting, pulling, lifting overhead, and working in awkward positions is required. Working Conditions: The incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions, in temperatures that vary from 11 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit for consecutive days in the blazing sun and possibly in inclement weather. The incumbent may be exposed to insect bites, potential broken bones, burns, bruises and lacerations. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
