The main responsibilities of the Corporate Actuarial Manager in the Strategic Planning team include:

• Preparation of Budget and Forecasts

The responsibility is to provide an estimate of future expected loss ratios for a five year time horizon using appropriate assumptions and methods. The expected loss ratio is the main component of the Budget/Forecasts and requires a very good understanding of the business, including future changes in terms of product offer and product changes. Expected claims costs have to be projected and if not done properly, profit or growth objectives will significantly be impacted. The projection includes an estimate a future reserve variations which are used to project investment returns, a projection of future fiscal year claims expenses and is used as the main input to the FCT process.

• Reporting

The responsibility relates to building meaningful reports on actual vs planned premium projections, claims experience on a frequency and severity basis, and monthly financial results that provide insightful information to management that will allow for appropriate decision making.

Governance/Miscellaneous

Implement risk mitigation, risk controls as well as processes, policies and procedures for the team and support the other Corporate Actuarial teams during peak time.

• Other Projects

Support other corporate actuarial processes as needed including actuarial valuations, appointed actuary's report, FCT and ECAP modeling.

• Leadership and People Management

  • Lead a team of two actuarial analysts.

  • Develop talent and manage performance reviews of team members.

  • Act as a coach and mentor for team members.

  • Provide team members with development opportunities within and outside the business unit.

  • Support recruiting strategy to hire best potential.

  • Participate actively as a leader to TD activities, notably in TDI Corporate Actuarial and Risk Management teams.

  • Present forecasts to executives and act as a subject matter expert.

  • Manage efficiently external requests

  • Respect TD Framework and Shared Commitments.

Job requirements:

• Professional Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in Actuarial science, or other quantitative area of study.

  • Acquired or working towards Fellowship with the Casualty Actuarial Society, Canadian Institute of Actuaries or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 7 years of Property & Casualty ("P&C") actuarial experience including relevant people management experience.

• Analytical/Technical Skills:

  • Has strong problem-solving skills.

  • Skilled at anticipating the results of an analysis or a report.

  • Recognized for thoroughness and the quality of their work.

  • Shows initiative, creativity and critical thinking in their work.

  • Has work experience with MS Excel(VBA) and other programming languages (eg. R/SAS/Python).

  • Ability to make good decisions quickly when the situation so requires.

• Soft Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. French is an asset.

  • Highly adaptable for having discussions with different stakeholders in terms of expertise, training and hierarchical position.

  • Ability to work effectively during periods of stress.

  • Ability to collaborate and build positive relationships with team members and business partners.

  • Autonomous and perseverant.

  • Fosters team spirit and loyalty to the company.

  • Motivated by people management and talent development.
