Alabama Department of Transportation Transportation Maintenance Technician I in Montgomery, Alabama
Positions are available for both Shelby County and Jefferson County.
Job Description This is entry-level semi-skilled work which includes light to heavy equipment operation in connection with the maintenance and construction of highway facilities. Employees in this class are responsible for performing semi-skilled tasks ranging from simple work to the operation of various pieces of mechanized equipment. Employees may use or learn to use a variety of specialized tools and equipment, exert moderate to heavy physical effort, and work out of doors under varying weather conditions. This class is distinguished from the Transportation Maintenance Technician II level in that this is an entry-level position with primary responsibility to perform or learn to perform simple to moderate maintenance tasks and equipment operation. Employees receive detailed instructions and normally perform work under the supervision of a crew leader or supervisor who observes work in progress and upon completion.
Examples of Work Performed (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties which may be performed.)
- Operates or learns to operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, road graders, gradalls, steel and rubber wheel rollers, asphalt distributors, street sweepers, heavy-duty tractors, dump trucks, snooper/reachall trucks, sign trucks, lowboys, tandem truck and trailers and bulldozers.
- Transports or learns to transport heavy equipment to worksites using a lowboy and/or a tandem truck and trailer.
- Performs or learns to perform highway maintenance work such as installing pavement striping and markers, operating a sign installation truck or herbicide spraying truck, installing drainage pipe and culverts, and repairing asphalt and concrete structures.
- Maintains and repairs buildings, concrete structures, bridges, drainage facilities, guardrails, and fences.
- Services equipment operated to include checking for malfunctions and reporting need for repairs Inspects highway facilities and right-of-way for maintenance needs.
- Performs building trades work in repairing or restoring structures.
Compensable Factors (The following statements are provided in order to identify compensable factors. Minimum qualifications utilized for selection purposes will be determined as part of an examination job analysis procedure.) Completion of eighth grade.
Additional Requirements Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License. *ALDOT can train and pay for new employees to obtain this CDL. If so, the employee will be under a conditional 2-year contract.
