Merck Principal Engineer - Solution Architecture Practice in Montgomery, Alabama

Job Description

We are currently seeking a Cloud & Infrastructure Technology Principal Engineer to help define and mature our solution architecture practice. This is also an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of our broader company's practice outside our team.

Responsibilities

  • Define the identity and expectations of solution architecture practitioners.

  • Develop a strategic vision for our solution architecture practice that will be embraced by practitioners across roles such as product owner, engineer, and solution architect.

  • Collaborate with practitioners to publish and drive a roadmap of what outcomes the practice will produce.

  • Ensure the practice defines comprehensive documentation of complex solutions and maintain documentation standards.

  • Build relationships across the broader IT organization leadership to increase adoption and maturity of the practice.

  • Define methodology for community to capture solution architecture patterns and drive pattern awareness and reuse.

  • Define how to capture and share best-practices amongst an emerging solution architecture community.

  • Coach and mentor senior community practitioners to mature their practice and create a pipeline of community leadership talent.

  • Demonstrate the value of the practice and decrease time to value for practitioners.

  • Drive enhancement of the solution architecture practitioner experience.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, other relevant engineering / technical discipline.

  • 15+ years of Compute/Hosting infrastructure solution architecture, engineering, delivery, and operations experience.

  • 10+ years of specific technology domain areas (e.g. software development, cloud computing, systems engineering, infrastructure, security, networking, data & analytics) experience.

  • 5+ years experience in working in Agile ways of working.

Preferred

  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.

  • Advanced solution architecture certification (AWS Solution Architect Professional, GCP Professional Cloud Architect, Azure Solutions Architect Expert).

  • Experience leading a community of practice or open source style project that delivers outcomes without direct HR reporting structure.

  • Experience architecting solutions using both Linux/Unix and Windows with specific recommendations on server, load balancing, HA/DR, & storage architectures.

  • Experience with enterprise architecture frameworks like TOGAF.

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Intellectual curiosity to always keep your technical skills current while maintaining a pulse on industry trends.

  • Advanced experience with cloud technologies and platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.

  • Excellent collaboration skills and a track record of cross-functional collaboration.

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

The Company is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this job in certain states and cities within the United States. Final determinations with respect to salary will take into account a number of factors, which may include, but not be limited to the primary work location and the chosen candidate’s relevant skills, experience, and education.

Expected US salary range:

$181,600.00 - $285,800.00
