SURGE STAFFING LLC Hazardous Chemical Controller in MONROEVILLE, Pennsylvania

The Hazardous Chemical Controller is responsible for managing, monitoring, and ensuring the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals within the workplace. This role involves compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations, maintaining proper documentation, and conducting safety training to protect employees, property, and the environment from chemical-related risks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Chemical Management: Oversee the safe receipt, storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous chemicals in compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental standards.
  • Inventory Control: Maintain an up-to-date inventory of hazardous chemicals, ensuring that proper labeling, safety data sheets (SDS), and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are readily available.
  • Safety Compliance: Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify potential chemical hazards and ensure all safety equipment (e.g., protective gear, ventilation systems) is in place and functional.
  • Risk Assessment: Evaluate potential chemical hazards associated with operations and recommend appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Training & Awareness: Provide training to staff on proper chemical handling, emergency response procedures, and the safe use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Ensure employees are familiar with current safety standards and chemical hazard communication protocols.
  • Emergency Response: Develop and implement emergency response procedures for chemical spills, leaks, or other hazardous incidents, and lead or assist in emergency response as needed.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Ensure accurate and timely documentation of hazardous chemical inventories, safety inspections, incident reports, and compliance activities. Report findings to regulatory bodies when necessary.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay current on local, state, and federal regulations regarding hazardous chemicals and ensure the organization is in compliance with all laws and guidelines.
  • Continuous Improvement: Promote a culture of safety by recommending improvements to existing procedures, equipment, and protocols to reduce chemical-related risks.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Experience: At least [X] years of experience in chemical management, hazardous materials handling, or a related safety/environmental role.
  • Certifications: Certification in hazardous materials handling, OSHA 30-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER, or other relevant safety certifications preferred.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of chemical safety regulations, hazardous material handling, risk assessment, and emergency response protocols.
  • Skills: Strong attention to detail, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient with safety management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and knowledge of hazardous chemical databases and labeling systems.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move heavy containers or equipment related to chemical handling.
  • Ability to work in environments where exposure to hazardous materials is possible (with proper protective equipment).
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations swiftly and efficiently.

Work Environment:

  • The position may require working in manufacturing, laboratory, or field environments where hazardous chemicals are stored or used.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required to perform specific duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a hazardous chemical management role in a manufacturing, industrial, or laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with che ical hazard identification and risk analysis tools.
  • Experience with chemical spill response and containment strategies.
