Serves as Aviation Safety Assistant in a Flight Standards field office. Provides administrative and semi-technical support to the Aviation Safety Inspectors by obtaining background data, preparing reports, reviewing applications, interviewing applicants, processing certificates, and maintaining technical and administrative files. Processes FAA-issued airman certificates such as ground instructor, flight instructor, mechanic repairman, and flight engineer. Interviews applicants to determine qualifications for non-complex certificates. Processes FAA authorizations such as inspection authorization, aircrew program designee, and aerobatic competency. Processes FAA-issued operator and air agency certificates, such as air carrier, repair stations, and approved schools. Examines applications and supporting documents for completeness, consistency of information, and assures correction, if required. Responsible for processing temporary airman certification files for certificates issued by designated examiners. Examines applications and supporting documents for completeness, consistency of information, and fulfillment of Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) requirements. Assures correction, if required. Monitors and tracks returned files. Supports the Designated Written Test Examiner (DWTE) program by providing orientation and training of new examiners, providing required annual and periodic training as necessary. Has responsibility for security, accountability and destruction of question selection sheets, sorting, assembling and furnishing written test examiners with test materials, and following up to ensure corrective action is taken if necessary. May conduct FAA written examinations by assembling and distributing test materials and by preparing necessary supporting documentation. Monitors written test examinations. Researches appropriate handbooks, collects information, organizes material pertinent to meetings and training sessions such as pre-certification, examiner renewal, inspector authorization, and flight examiner and written test examiner indoctrinations. May conduct written test examiner training sessions when necessary. Assists in interpreting and implementing newly modified agency directives relating to accident, incident, enforcement processing, and airmen/operator certification file processing. Determines necessary action and notification to assure staff is aware of latest changes. Answers inquiries from and advises unit personnel regarding the preparation of the unit's technical work. Researches, writes, and types non-technical and routine technical correspondence. Receives, sorts and distributes incoming correspondence, attaching background information when necessary. Types material using typewriter or word processor, assembles information and reviews for proper format, grammar, spelling, and accuracy. Prepares reports (such as accident, incident, violation, recurring and special reports) by researching, requesting information, creating files, preparing control sheets, copying and distributing preliminary and final report documents, and reviewing for accuracy and completeness. Responsible for assigned technical and administrative files such as certificated operator and designee case files in accordance with agency directives. Coordinates unit's schedule with regard to inspectors' schedules, flight checks, exams, itinerary and coordinates supervisor's appointment schedule. Receives incoming telephone calls, answers technical inquiries, and directs all other incoming calls appropriately. Assembles and enters information into various automated programs, such as Program Tracking and Reporting Subsystem (PTRS), Operations Specifications Subsystems (OPSS), Vital Information Subsystem (VIS), and Enforcement Information System (EIS) and retrieves, prints, and reviews output. Assists with the agency aircraft program by monitoring daily flight logs for correctness and compliance with procedures.
Occasional travel - The job may require travel from time- to-time, but not on a regular basis. The travel may be for training or other work-related duties.
