Works independently, with minimal guidance. Has the responsibility for performing professional laboratory work in a research laboratory to carry out laboratory or field studies involving conventional methods and techniques. Maintains strong and regular communications with on- and off-site personnel. Job Duties: (20%) Conduct investigations or experiments in an assigned area to aid in finding the solution to a research problem. Writes routine summary reports on results of work and confers with the PI on interpretations of results and investigation methods. (30%)Tests lab techniques, modifies and/or develops new protocols, maintains and adapts lab equipment. (10%) Orders and maintains lab supplies and equipment. Keeps detailed ordering budget records in accordance with specific grants. (15%) Executes experiments using methods created according to previously published methods. (10%) Independently creates and plans experiments based on knowledge of the field, gained by researching the relevant literature, contacting other researchers in the field, and collaborating with other labs. (10%) Analyze data collected from experiments. Synthesize data in easily readable format and prepare graphs, charts, tables, and reports. (5%) Review literature relating to research projects and assists in writing technical reports for publication. Qualifications Required Qualifications: BA/BS with at least 2 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal six years; position involves generating, comparing, evaluating, verifying and reconciling data to help department achieve overall objectives. Candidates must be highly-motivated, detail-oriented, independent, and willing to work as part of a team. Previous experience working with microbes and media preparation, supervision, and/or research experience required. Preferred Qualifications: Degree in microbiology, plant pathology, or related field. High-level attention to detail and ability to work efficiently and consistently in sometimes repetitive tasks. Ability to work independently, strong communication skills, ability to lead projects with curiosity and accountability to timelines and success metrics. Capability to manage multiple workflows and responsibilities ranging from routine culture maintenance, driving experimental progress, data management and first-pass analyses, literature reviews, and preparation of publication-ready materials and methods and graphics. Interest in participating actively in co-authorship of scientific publications. About the Department This position is in the Kinkel Lab in the Department of Plant Pathology in CFANS on the St. Paul, MN campus of the University of Minnesota.
