Stinson Leonard Street LLP Pro Bono Law Clerk - PT 25 Hours/Week in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Summary The Pro Bono Law Clerk works both in a professional office environment (est. 30%) and in a fast-paced, non-profit, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis (est. 70%.) The clerk should have a commitment to working with low-income people and medical-legal partnerships. The position is part-time (25 hours a week) and pays $22.00 an hour. No benefits are provided. The position starts in December and runs through the Summer. Required Education & Experience The student should be enrolled in the second or third year of law school and have completed (or currently enrolled in) the Professional Responsibility course. Preferred Education & Experience Experience in the family law, immigration or housing law areas and prior law school clinical is preferred. Fluency in either Spanish, Somali or Hmong helpful. Pro Bono Work (95%) Perform client intakes on a weekly basis on Deinard Legal Clinic cases. The law firm runs a 25-year old poverty law clinic in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. The student will work under the supervision with Stinson Leonard Street's Pro Bono Director, Theresa Murray Hughes, a licensed attorney, on the initial client intake and screenings, as well as interface with staff at the Community University Health Care Center (CUHCC) on client matters and case support. Given that the student will have had professional responsibility, s/he will meet with prospective clients to determine what their legal issues and needs are. The clerk will also provide brief service and advice on matters and assist with referrals to other legal agencies under Murray Hughes' supervision. Work with a variety of Stinson Leonard Street attorneys in the Minneapolis office in support of those attorneys' pro bono matters. The range of cases that attorneys work on from the Deinard Legal Clinic involve family law matters, housing issues, immigration matters (specifically: permanent residency, citizenship and U Visas), Social Security and Insurance (SSI) appeals, consumer/identity theft issues and criminal expungements. Collaborate with the members of the Upper Midwest Health Law Partnership, a joint effort of fourteen medical legal partnerships in Minnesota and North Dakota, to improve health by advancing justice through integrating legal services into healthcare delivery to assist people facing crises that harm health.
