The Mechanic will perform preventative maintenance and repair to building and grounds equipment as a member of the MN Landscape Arboretum's Building Maintenance Team. As a research center and extension of the University of Minnesota's College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS), the Arboretum requires agility to support day-to-day operations, and anticipate the needs of seasonal and year-round repair and maintenance. The Arboretum is open to the public seven (7) days a week, 363 days of the year, and schedules will vary to reflect fluctuations in business needs. Job Responsibilities 60% Repair & Maintain Building Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical Systems Perform routine inspections of building systems to ensure they are operating correctly Ensure systems meet local codes, regulations, and University/Arboretum standards Maintain belts, filters, lamps and other parts; replace components as necessary Address leaks, clogs, and other plumbing issues promptly Record all maintenance and repairs 20% Repair & Maintain Buildings and Equipment Perform regular inspections, clean, troubleshoot and repair Repair/maintain windows, restroom fixtures, entry and overhead doors (including automatic closers, automatic openers, panic bars, latches and locks), and other building systems and equipment Inventory and reorder lamps, cords, batteries, etc. Provide office furniture set up, hang shelves and perform other building-related maintenance duties 10% Computerized Fire/Life Safety, Lighting, Building Automation Systems and Elevators Maintain and repair building systems such as elevators, fire alarms, and security systems. Perform routine inspections to ensure systems are operating correctly Program systems for changing evening and weekend events Program systems to save energy while maintaining safety Respond to trouble calls and make necessary repairs and adjustments Record all tests and inspections required by local codes, regulations, and University/Arboretum standards 10% Special Exhibits, Grounds, and Other Perform maintenance and repairs on exhibits and grounds facilities including fountains, waterfalls, and outdoor lighting Perform snow/ice removal (building and equipment responsibilities take priority) Be present at major programs/events; assist with mechanic-related event support Effectively communicate maintenance issues, repairs, and status updates Other duties as assigned Note: This does not include all possible responsibilities in this work and does not limit the assignment of related responsibilities. __ Starting Hourly Rate: $30.61/hr (Step 1). This is a Teamsters union position which will include the University of MN complete benefits package, shift differential, wage increases and other provisions per the union contract. Schedule: First 3 Months M-F 7:00 am - 3:30 pm for onboarding. After onboarding, a rotating schedule starts. Rotating days to be determined and typically 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Schedules will vary to include weekends and occasional evenings and mornings for special events, projects, and snow removal. Overtime only by approval Qualifications Required Qualifications (must be reflected on application/resume): Technical education/training in mechanical maintenance totaling two years, including one of year of applicable work experience Ability to follow written and oral instructions and the ability to meet the physical requirements of this position. Valid MN Driver License and background check are required. Special Engineer Boiler License or obtain within the first year of employment Preferred Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities: Interact with fellow employees, management, customers, and the general public in a courteous, cooperative and professional manner. Maintain a positive public image, positive attitude and demeanor when performing a service for customers and the general public at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Safely perform duties following established University safe operating procedures and practices. Basic computer skills, ability to troubleshoot technology Strong interpersonal skills.
