Apply for Job Job ID361485 LocationTwin Cities;Duluth Job FamilyResearch-Researchers Full/Part TimeFull-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code8352R1 Employee ClassCivil Service Add to Favorite Jobs Email this Job About the Job Seeking a detail oriented GIS Technician to join the multi-faceted U-Spatial team. 50% of the GIS Technician's effort will support hazard mitigation planning work in consultation with U-Spatial staff, academic staff and external entities. This could include GIS analysis, data cleaning, cartography, scripting, report writing, and communication with clients. This position will be exposed to a wide range of geospatial technologies and methods, however day-to-day work will include non-GIS tasks as well. This person will need to work independently, however, they will collaborate regularly with other U-Spatial staff to develop workflow. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Research and Project Assistance (90%) Project work assigned based on needs and may include (50% HMP, 40% other): * Cartographic design and mapping * Acquire, clean, and perform quality assurance on various datasets, including Microsoft Excel files * Geocode large address datasets * Perform spatial analyses * Hazard mitigation plan research: review of written material * Use and modify scripts and programs for spatial analysis, data processing, and web applications * Design and develop Esri web applications such as Dashboards and Hub * Assist with research and written reports User Services (5%) * Provide coverage for user services inquiries * Execute small projects that arise from inquiries Other tasks (5%) * Assist at U-Spatial events and lectures * Participate in regular staff meetings * Attend conferences and other events Qualifications Required qualifications * BS/BA or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years * Experience with GIS software and tools, including at least one of ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Desktop * Skilled user of word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g. Microsoft Word/Excel, Google Docs/Sheets) * Strong attention to details * Demonstrated good writing and communication skills Preferred qualifications * BS/BA in geography, geographic information science (GIS), remote sensing, or a related field About the Department With offices on both the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses, U-Spatial collaborates with a variety of departments and centers, creating new opportunities and synergies around spatial research, teaching, and service as well as supporting projects with application development and spatial analysis. This position can be based in either Duluth or Twin Cities. Some on-site work may be necessary for certain positions, even those designated as fully remote. This position has been designated as work profile 2.
