The University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment (IonE) is a nationally recognized interdisciplinary institution that works to advance sustainability through collaborative research, leadership and education programming, and public-interest storytelling and communications. This spring, we are seeking a full-time Communications Specialist, with some project/stakeholder management experience, to lead communications for a portfolio of our externally funded research projects. We are looking for a Communications Specialist who enjoys a range of work - designing communications strategies to achieve project goals; developing written and multimedia content; managing websites, social media, and newsletters; coordinating with media; and tracking the effectiveness of these activities. This work includes close coordination with scientists, researchers, students, and non-academic project partners from diverse sectors, including government, education, the nonprofit sector and industry. Effective research communication specialists establish strategic, collaborative plans to advance project impact; are detail-oriented and self-assured in the selection and deployment of different tactics; and enjoy the consultative process of figuring out how to translate scientific results in ways that are meaningful to public audiences. Competitive candidates will have diverse portfolios that show expertise in both content development and deployment through different communication channels, platforms, and pathways. This position is supervised by Dr. Melissa Kenney, IonE director of research, and will be part of a community of communicators at IonE, including other project-focused communicators and core IonE communications staff. The salary range for this position is $55k-$65k/yr and will focus on three research portfolios: The (DAWN) is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded project to develop a decision support system that helps to increase land, nutrient, and water use efficiency in order to maximize crop production in corn, soy, and bioenergy fields (50% time); A suite of environmental decision support science projects focused on moving the needle to more usable Federal data products that improve lives and livelihoods (30% time); and other existing or emergent, externally funded research projects (20% time). The position is based at the IonE offices on the St. Paul side of the Twin Cities campus. This position is structured to be primarily in-person, but could be set up to allow for a day or two of teleworking per week. Participating in IonE community convenings and building relationships, with colleagues and local/regional stakeholders, will contribute to success in this role, and candidates must reside locally - or intend to relocate. Please note, IonE/UMN cannot provide a moving allowance for employees who will be permanently or temporarily moving to the Twin Cities metro region for this position. Principal Duties and Responsibilities The percentages below reflect allocations of duties and responsibilities across all three project areas, to give you the best sense of the type of work this job entails. The projects are weig ted differently, so each week, you can expect to spend, on average, two and a half days (50% time) on DAWN, a day and a half (30%) on the decision support portfolio, and a day (20%) on research priorities and tasks in the "other" category. That said: percentages represent expected averages over time, instead of a strict week-to-week allocation of time. Communications Coordination & Content Development (50%) This category of work constitutes the content development and communications work necessary to meet project communication goals and milestones. Develop, deploy, and refine existing strategic communications plans for DAWN and for decision support projects, including customizing for the unique needs of each specific project Project Updates Publish a monthly internal DAWN digital newsletter Provide 3-4 times per year NOAA project updates to project stakeholders through emails, newsletters, or other forums that are most effective for the different audiences Establish and publish a 3-4 time per year external DAWN digital newsletter with occasional special news updates when there are tool releases Website content and basic construction Lead content development for the DAWN website - and write regular updates/news items Develop Google site or similar website and support content updates for decision support projects - and write regular updates/news items - to provide easily accessible and visible interface for audiences Establish and build social media presence on Facebook and Twitter; establish a YouTube channel if public webinars or training videos are established Develop a consistent visual identity and consistently branded templates for projects, such as slide decks, Google docs, newsletters, etc. Engage with communications teams at partner institutions to to support dissemination and amplification Report on communications segmented metrics once a semester and provide metrics and content for annual reporting Communications Impact Products (20%) This category of work constitutes the external science translation and communication content development and deployment work necessary to amplify impact both to broader scientific communities and to audiences who will use these scientific products. Lead the management, collaborative development, and production of how-to-guides, two-page fact sheets, glossary terms, FAQ, presentation, tool talking points, and/or other publications and products Manage the production of impact-oriented videos and the dissemination impact pathways Develop general presentations (outreach tool) Lead the draft creation of presentations, posters, and other scientific communication products Project and Stakeholder Management (10%) This category of work constitutes the work needed to have a well-developed and coordinated deployment of communications priorities, events to convene key partners towards shared goals, and the cultivation of external audiences needed to strategically grow impact.
