This position serves as chief advisor to the Vice President, manages emerging issues, and represents the Vice President to various constituencies. The Chief of Staff supports and implements the strategic goals and objectives of the U Services organization and facilitates coordination and team building among U Services departments to enhance services to the University community. U Services is the non-academic operating unit for the University of Minnesota, which includes: Auxiliary Services, Facilities Management, Capital Project Management, Planning, Space, and Real Estate, and University Sustainability. U Services units have over 3,700 employees and annual operating budgets of approximately $450 million. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Facilitate definition of U Services strategic direction and alignment of departments with such direction * Facilitate the development of strategic goals and objectives for U Services. Ensure the development and oversight of strategic and operational metrics to strengthen accountability and support strategic resource alignment. * Manage and coordinate organizational development initiatives including the employee engagement program and other leadership initiatives. * Develop and oversee the execution of the U Services annual calendar. Facilitate coordination among U Services departments * Develop and manage the overall U Services calendar of planning and work schedules (HR, finance, capital, etc.) and integrate into staff meetings, communications, and workplans. * Plan, schedule, and lead the U Services Leadership team meetings. * Create opportunities to strengthen coordination among U Services units, including planning U Services leadership team building retreats and follow up on retreat outcomes to continue to strengthen the coordination of the U Services leadership team. * Convene the directors of the U Services HR, Finance, and IT to ensure integration and coordination of their programs. * Coordinate U Services Board of Regents planning. Partner with the Senior Vice President's office regarding work planning, related policies, and requisite approvals. Facilitate coordination between U Services departments and others in the University or external to the University * Contribute to and support executive decisions by serving on institution-wide project teams. * Lead U Services project work teams as assigned by the Vice President. * Direct and lead U Services communication strategies and initiatives in partnership with U Relations. * Maintain strong working relationships at all levels of the organization. Participate in meetings with senior staff and University constituents. * Represent the Vice President and U Services to multiple and diverse internal and external constituencies. Serve as liaison for a variety of areas and conduct other activities at the direction of the Vice President. * Serve on the University's Policy Advisory Committee. Coordinate and manage all aspects of the University policy program for U Services units. * Lead the coordination of University Services resources in response to major events. * Oversee the coordination and response to internal audits of U Services departments. Management Oversight * Manage the human and financial resources of the Office of the Vice President, including the preparation and management of an annual budget, long-range forecasts of needs, and providing direction and supervision to the executive assistant to the Vice President. * Serve as a member of the Vice President's Leadership Team. * Exercise delegated authority from the Vice President. Coordinate the Vice President's schedule. * Participate in the annual compensation review process with U Services Finance and HR. * Lead/delegate special projects/initiatives. * Assist in the creation of a positive work environment incorporating the University's commitment to equal opportunity and diversity in hiring, retention, and promotion of employees and empowering employees to use their full range of talents and abilities. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position requires a physical campus presence, as well as occasional travel to other campuses within Minnesota. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * A bachelor's degree is required, and at least twelve years of experience; a relevant advanced degree is preferred. * A minimum of eight years' experience in strategic administrative positions demonstrating effective leadership skills and excellent organizational and managerial abilities. * Knowledge of and experience with University of Minnesota policies, systems, and procedures, and working understanding of different levels of the University governance system is preferred. * Knowledge of public finance, budgeting, human resources, and capital planning is preferred.
