Summary There is a Physician Assistant (PA) position open in Orthopedics within the Surgical Care Division at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Responsibilities The Physician Assistant is an essential member of the Orthopedic Team providing direct patient care to our Veterans. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. Responsibilities to include: Participate in clinics seeing postoperative and other patients as needed. Complete patient assessment, including history and physical exams as indicated and order appropriate diagnostic tests, as specified in clinical privileges. Support the advanced clinic access (ACA) principles to improve clinic flow, reduce number of visits per unique; improve patient wait time in clinic. Provide continuity of patient care between the outpatient and inpatient venues. Perform initial evaluation of consults in the ER, ICU, and inpatient units when residents are in the operating room or at a conference. Assist in the daily management on the inpatient floors when residents are not available and work collaboratively with the floor nurses. Provide specialty care to patients with acute and chronic problems, managed by the orthopedic subspecialty. Prescribe medications, diet, supplies, prosthetic devices, and home health aids according to clinical privileges. Coordinate special order items and off station testing as needed. Teach and counsel patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, plan of care and intervene with optimal treatment for patients and families; evaluate outcomes and modify treatment plans as indicated. Participate on interdisciplinary councils, task forces, and committees as assigned. Participate in selection and development of patient education materials. Advance clinical knowledge of self and others by presenting relevant information and continuing education programs for nursing and medical staff. Participate in clinical research relevant to the Orthopedic patient population. Assist in the collection of data and implementing system changes. Perform limited number of orthopedic procedures commensurate with experience and privileging when onboarded or at a later date, as appropriate. Assist in the operating room for selected procedures aligned with clinic needs, experience, and privileging when onboarded or at a later date. Perform assigned administrative duties including quality assurance, peer review, serving on various committees as directed by administration, and as deemed appropriate by the managing physician. Other non-clinical tasks may also be assigned. Qualifications Physician Assistant Basic Requirements Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant AND Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) AND Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Preferred/Required Experience: Current or previous experience with managing orthopedic outpatient and inpatients is preferred. Experience with joint injections is preferred. Current PA License Required. Graduate of master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies Required WI Prescriptive Authority Required Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational skills. Grade Determination: Three years of successful practice as a PA, or Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program sponsored by VHA Office of Academic Affiliations or other postgraduate residency programs accredited by VA, ARC-PA, US Armed Forces, or another accrediting agency and one year of professional practice as a PA, or A doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education and one year of professional practice as a PA.
