Description

At In-Place Machining we're the elite force of field machining! Whether it's a ship, a wind turbine towering over a remote landscape, or a luxury yacht in a tropical paradise we bring the shop to the job! We specialize in precision machining and large scale cutting and drilling and metrology and alignment services. Working as a Field Machinist at In-Place will take you to some of the most fascinating places on Earth! One day you may be working on the Hoover Dam and the next removing broken studs refurbishing threaded holes up tower on a wind turbine!

Summary

Responsible for basic fixturing, tool set-up, machining, in-process inspection, and final completion of moderately tolerance details (+/- 0.010). Work with machining personnel, field machinists, engineers, and supervisors to plan and execute the most cost-effective method for producing quality parts.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Operate basic manual and field machining equipment.

  • Under technical supervision, can perform the following tasks on basic jobs while maintaining tolerance and finish requirements:

  • Field Machining

  • Develop processes, select tooling, and perform setups

  • Under technical supervision, can assist/perform the following tasks:

  • Mobilizations of equipment for basic jobs

  • Demobilizations of basic equipment

  • Repairs and maintenance of basic equipment

  • For basic jobs, develop processes, select tooling, and perform setups

  • Utilize TRACE system for the management and tracking of equipment.

  • Ensure dimensional accuracy and quality workmanship

  • Complete appropriate paperwork as required

  • Provide feedback to improve programs, processes, tooling etc

  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and clean work area

  • Perform shop duties as directed and required.

Requirements

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED/HSED, required

  • Journeyman or 2-year technical degree, preferred

Experience & Skills

  • Two to three years of progressively responsible related experience. Specifically, this position requires:

  • Experience (2-3 years) with manual and/or field machining

  • Experience with Bridgeport knee mills

  • Experience with manual engine lathes

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints & mechanical drawings

  • Ability to operate manual machining equipment

  • Ability to measure/inspect: lengths, diameters, straightness, flatness, etc

  • Ability to measure using 1-12” O.D. micrometers; 1-12” I.D. micrometers; depth micrometers; height stand and up to 24” vernier micrometers.

  • Ability to perform basic rigging.

  • Ability to perform basic layout and inspections.

  • Knowledge of carbide drills, end mills, inserted cutters, and boring tooling

  • Knowledge of feeds & speeds

  • Knowledge of the machineability of ferrous and non-ferrous materials

  • Knowledge and application of cutting oils

  • Knowledge of tooling insert nomenclature

  • Knowledge of Morse tapers

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, production schedules, purchase orders, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such the fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as basic math, layout functions, fractions, decimals, angles, percentages and ratios.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of specifications and information furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment

  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems using critical thinking skills

  • Ability to organize and manage priorities, meet deadlines, and expectations

  • Ability to follow through on projects from conception to completion.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to do the following:

  • Occasionally talk or hear

  • Frequently sit, use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls

  • Frequently stand and walk

  • Frequently climb ladders and stairs

  • Frequently stoop, kneel, bend or crouch

  • Frequently lift and/or move physical products (up to 50 lbs)

  • Frequently use portable hand power tools (angle grinder, drill, power hammer, etc.)

  • Respirator fit testing and use may be required

  • Specific vision abilities: include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. These include: forklift traffic, overhead cranes, machining, welding, fumes, airborne particles, moving of mechanical parts and moderate noise. The work is performed indoors in a shop environment or a customer site both indoors and outdoors. Will spend a minimal amount of time outdoors in hot, cold, or otherwise inclement weather during part of the workweek.

Other Requirements

  • OSHA 10

  • Valid driver’s license, preferred

  • Successful completion of IPM Overhead Crane Training, required

  • Successful completion of IPM’s Forklift Training, required

  • Valid Forklift license, required

  • Travel Time – up to 75% (daily, overnight and weekends)

  • Travel Locations: jobs sites (domestic and international) and company facilities

  • Ability to utilize multiple mobile apps for time sheet entry, travel, expense reporting, etc
