NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE Assistant Director of Data Engineering in MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin
JOB REQUIREMENTS: The Assistant Director of Data Engineering at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin will manage and mentor engineer direct reports across multiple delivery teams. Participate with leadership team on strategic planning, roadmap development, and operational planning. Analyze business and functional specifications to deliver high-quality data solutions while maintaining development best practices with engineering teams. Learn and apply new cloud-based solutions, enhancements, and maintenance of existing solutions. Lead and produce functional and technical designs of data platform components (Services, Infrastructure, Data) and data solutions, and participate in all phases of development, testing, and production support. Participate in a financial services investment domain digital transformation. Work with engineering leadership and product organization to develop and manage roadmaps and feature definitions for Unified Data Platform. Collaborate with teams across data organization as well as infrastructure and cloud service. Maintain governance and security conformity within platform aligned with data architecture. Ensure delivery consistency and timeliness by engineering teams. Facilitate design discussions and ceremonies with teams to drive out a consistent development approach that focuses on fundamental engineering processes that align to Agile standards. Define standard operating procedures for engineering teams and align work to standards and practices of Platform Strategy organization. Define and track engineering team goals on a quarterly basis following standards of organization. Telecommuting permitted. Requires a Bachelor\'s degree in Computer Science, Analytics or related field, plus 5 years of experience as a software engineer, data engineer, or related occupation. 5 years of experience must include 2 years of experience with each of the following: (1) working with modern engineering tools, languages and practices, including AWS technologies (S3, DMS, and MSK), GitLab, Java, JavaScript, Python, and the Databricks platform and services; (2) leading engineering teams, including providing direct feedback and performance reviews; (3) designing and delivering technology solutions consisting of multiple components and vendor systems used by dozens of engineers or customers; (4) developing and leading solution delivery using agile methods; (5) communicating between product, engineering, and the business; and (6) data lake concepts, modern data stacks, and relational databases, including DB2 LUW, MySQL, Oracle, Sybase, or DB2 z/OS.
