Robert Half Director of Accounting in Mill Valley, California

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Director of Accounting to oversee and manage the day-to-day accounting operations for our growing 50+ location health and wellness, dermatology/ spa business. The Director of Accounting will lead a small team of three accounting professionals, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, compliance, and accounting processes. The role requires a proactive and detail-oriented leader who will collaborate with the Controller and other departments to drive financial integrity and efficiency across our business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Team Management:

  • Supervise, mentor, and provide guidance to the accounting team, ensuring a high level of performance, accuracy, and adherence to deadlines.

  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Financial Reporting & Analysis:

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP.

  • Analyze financial results, identify trends, and provide insights and recommendations to management to support business decisions.

  • Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts.

  • Accounting Operations:

  • Oversee general ledger activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.

  • Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.

  • Manage cash flow projections and prepare bank reconciliations.

  • Compliance & Internal Controls:

  • Ensure adherence to accounting principles, policies, and internal controls to maintain compliance with all relevant regulations and tax laws.

  • Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits and tax filings.

  • Stay updated on changes in tax regulations, accounting standards, and industry best practices.

  • Process Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and streamline accounting workflows.

  • Lead the implementation of new accounting software or system updates as needed.

  • Collaboration & Communication:

  • Work closely with the Controller, senior leadership, and cross-functional teams to provide financial insights and drive business strategy.

  • Support business growth by ensuring financial processes are scalable and aligned with company objectives.

    Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent certification preferred.

  • 7-10+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.

  • Public accounting (audit) experience strongly preferred.

  • Proven experience in accounting within a multi-location, service-based business.

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and tax regulations.

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar platforms) and Microsoft Excel.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
